Summary

Having sailed with Sir Francis Drake, swashbuckling privateer Rodney Hawkhurst yearns for a galleon of his own with which to plunder the Spanish Main in the name of Queen Elizabeth. Seeking investment from Sir Harry Gillingham, he has a fleeting encounter with an elfin, tomboyish golden-red-haired beauty ? Sir Harry?s youngest daughter Lizbeth ? and is bewitched by her limpid green eyes. Yet it is fair and golden-haired elder sister Phillida with whom he first falls in love... Granted his finances on the condition that Sir Harry?s weak, possibly even traitorous son sails with him in the hope that the mission will make him a man, Rodney embarks on a voyage of blood, honour and glory in which he gains great riches but loses his heart, not once, but twice. The risks are great but so are the rewards: wealth beyond compare and, as Rodney finally discovers, a greater, deeper, more passionate love than he ever imagined possible.

Life does not unfold by design. It moves, shifts, adapts—sometimes in harmony, often in chaos. What, then, is the right way to live? With his signature clarity and quiet defiance, Ralph Waldo Emerson steps beyond theory into the pulse of everyday existence. He does not prescribe rigid formulas but instead offers something sharper: a way of seeing.
Here, work is not mere labor but an act of self-realization. Power is not control but a force that shapes character. Fate is not an iron law but a current to navigate. Love, culture, beauty, behavior—each finds its place, not as abstract ideals but as forces in motion. Emerson does not soften reality; he meets it head-on, stripping away illusions, demanding engagement.
There are no final answers, only the insistence that life must be lived with both strength and openness. This is not a manual for comfort but for those who seek meaning beyond convention, who recognize that the path is not given—it is made.
In The Conduct of Life, Emerson's exploration unfolds across these essays, each a facet of life's ever-changing design:
    I. Fate
    II. Power
    III. Wealth
    IV. Culture
    V. Behavior
    VI. Worship
    VII. Considerations by the Way
    VIII. Beauty
    IX. Illusions

    NOT Accountable - Rethinking the...

"Elected leaders come and go, but public unions just say no." Hiding in plain sight is a fatal defect of modern democracy. Public employee unions have a death grip on the operating machinery of government. Schools can't work, bad cops can't be fired, and politicians sell their souls for union support. With this searing five-point indictment, Philip K. Howard argues that union controls have disempowered elected executives and should be unconstitutional.

Elected officials answer to public employees. Basic tools of good government have been eliminated. There's no accountability, detailed union entitlements make government largely unmanageable and unaffordable, and public policies are driven by what is good for public employees, not what is good for the public. Public unions keep it that way by brute political force—harnessing the huge cohort of public employees into a political force dedicated to preventing the reform of government.

The solution, Howard argues, is not political but constitutional. America's republican form of government requires an executive branch that is empowered to implement public policies, not one shackled to union controls. Public employees have a fiduciary duty to serve the public and should not be allowed to organize politically to harm the public.

Reality Therapy is a therapeutic approach that emphasizes personal responsibility and focuses on the present moment, encouraging individuals to make choices that align with their true desires and values. Developed by Dr. William Glasser in the 1960s, it diverges from traditional therapeutic methods by centering on the idea that behavior is a choice and that people can gain control of their lives through conscious decisions.
At the core of Reality Therapy is the concept that all behavior is purposeful and is driven by an individual's attempt to fulfill basic needs. These needs include survival, love and belonging, power, freedom, and fun. When people feel that these needs are unmet, they often engage in behaviors that are designed to satisfy them, even if those behaviors are not helpful or productive. Reality Therapy challenges individuals to evaluate whether their current behaviors are effective in meeting these needs and whether they are serving their long-term goals.
Another key aspect of Reality Therapy is the belief that individuals can only control their own actions. While external circumstances may influence a person's situation, the therapy stresses that the responsibility for behavior lies with the individual. This approach encourages people to focus on what they can change—namely, their actions—and to stop blaming others or external conditions for their problems. It promotes the idea that by changing one’s choices, it is possible to create a more fulfilling and responsible life.

German women played an essential role in the Nazi movement that outweighed the Nazi Party's propaganda that a woman's position was solely in the home as mothers and child-bearers. Thirteen million of the projected forty million German women in the Reich were active in Nazi Party organizations that promoted the regime's goals of racial purity, imperial conquest, and global war. The Nazi party was about as male-centered as any political party in history. Its ideas on women and women's rightful responsibilities in society were novel and, at best, radical. Despite this, the Party received widespread and active support among women in Germany at the time. This book investigates Magda Goebbels, Leni Riefenstahl, and Winifried Wagner and how they became enchanted by Hitler and obliged [his] Nazi philosophy. These three ladies were not ordinary Germans. Magda was hitched to Joseph Goebbels, the Reich Minister of Enlightenment and Propaganda and perhaps the most influential man of the Third Reich. An entertainer and famous movie chief, Leni was liable for a key publicity film. Winifred was hitched to author Richard Wagner's child and assumed responsibility for Wagner's inheritance. Hitler was captivated by every one of the women and used them to add his longing to reestablish Germany to its past brilliance. The women concurred with Hitler's longing to renew Germany's significance and perceived that once he became Chancellor, they would benefit enormously. These women didn't act as indicated by the standards of the times. They got out of the endorsed jobs relegated to ladies.
