The author was inspired to write this book in an effort to help parents and teenage youth, particularly adolescents (12 to 17 year-olds) about the dangers of abusing opioid prescription drugs, substances, and alcohol. In this book the reader will learn to define and describe patterns of prescription (opioid) drug and alcohol abuse while identifying the commonly abused prescription drugs and reasons for abuse in a solution focused approach to educating, preventing and treating prescription ( opioid) drug, alcohol, and other substances use disorders. The author addresses America's struggles with the epidemic of drug substance and alcohol addiction, and how important it is for families to be able to break the feeling of isolation, by connecting with community resources, and by having access to drug education, information, and services that promote health and wellness. The author, believes in assessing the "root cause" of substance use, pain and other underline health issues in order to develop an appropriate plan of action to problem solve the health or pain issues. She also believes in collaboratively referring patients and clients to pain specialists, psychotherapists or detox centers for evaluation. Dr. Miranda believes that as a society we must have understanding and patience. Thus, this book is a valuable resource for relatives, friends, or neighbors of youth who are or were addicts to drug or substances, as well as those who have died from drug or substance abuse. This is an excellent read for those who want to be a help for hope and healing! Dr. Miranda M.   When you read about what I got up to you’re going to say I got what I deserved. You’re right—I totally agree. Many of you won't like me no doubt and that’s ok—I understand, I really do. I’m not all bad though.I left the Isle of Skye in the early eighties to begin my nursing course in Edinburgh and it's fair to say I embraced the Capitals temptations with arms wide open. When I moved into a shared flat I met Bill, a musician, and got involved with his band Low Down, you know, helping them out, doing a bit of driving and humping gear about - it was great fun. Low Down were truly phenomenal. Man, I totally loved their music. We took drugs, I mean, I took drugs. Nothing heavy, just recreational-like.I met a lot of girls who I didn’t treat right and I’m not proud of my behaviour—honest. Nursing is a female-dominated profession and male nurses were thin on the ground. The opportunities for getting up to mischief were many. I worked hard and played harder.A lot of stuff I regret now. Especially what I did to Lisa – and others. Anyway, it couldn’t last, could it? The way I was living – something had to give.And it did.

  Grace Brewster Hopper (December 9, 1906 to January 1, 1992) was an American computer scientist, mathematician, and United States Navy rear admiral. A pioneer of computer programming, Hopper was the first to devise the theory of machine-independent programming languages and used this theory to develop the FLOW-MATIC programming language and COBOL, an early high-level programming language still in use today. She was also one of the first programmers on the Harvard Mark I computer. She is credited with writing the first computer manual, "A Manual of Operation for the Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator." The following audio recording is from a 1982 presentation.

  As interesting as the stories about Tycho Brahe are, chances are he wouldn’t be remembered if not for the important work he did, especially in the realm of astronomy. He lived in an era when the intellectual worldview of most in northern Europe was medieval in nature, influenced mostly by spirituality, mysticism, religion, and metaphysics. Brahe, however, was far-thinking in his outlook, taking advantages of the latest technological ideas and practicing empiricism to revolutionize the field of science. This work eventually led Brahe to cross paths with Johannes Kepler, whose laws on planetary motion would change everything.  
  Trying to define a man who had the qualities of a mathematician, astronomer, philosopher, inventor, and astrologer can prove difficult. But all of that can be ascribed to Johannes Kepler, one of the giants of his era who ushered in the Scientific Revolution and is often considered the first modern scientist. Kepler stood at a moment in time when the intellectual worldview of most in northern Europe was medieval in nature. Kepler, however, was far-thinking in his outlook. 
  	In his lifetime, Galileo straddled the epochs of the Renaissance and the Scientific Revolution, and it was his work and technological advances that helped usher in a brand new understanding of the solar system and the scientific method. Stephen Hawking himself has asserted, “Galileo, perhaps more than any other single person, was responsible for the birth of modern science." Of course, part of what made Galileo such a monumental figure was the fact that he was ahead of his time, and that he mostly refused to conform to the accepted dogmas of contemporary society.  
  In 1676, Sir Isaac Newton wrote in a letter, “If I have seen further it is by standing on ye sholders of Giants.” By the time he died, Newton had become science’s greatest giant, and every scientist who has followed him has stood on his shoulders.
