Summary

Prologue.

Aesthetics is the emotional perception of beauty introduced by Baumgarten (1714-1762) in Germany during the mid-18th century.
Aesthetics, with the goal of systematically interpreting aesthetic values, traces its philosophical origins back to ancient Greece.
To understand the perception of beauty in both the East and the West, we investigate the philosophical foundations of aesthetic judgment found in Greek aesthetics, Eastern Confucianism, Buddhism, Zen aesthetics, medieval aesthetics, Renaissance aesthetics, modern aesthetics, and contemporary aesthetics.


\"Gödel, Escher, Bach (1979)\" by American cognitive scientist Douglas Richard Hofstadter (1945- ) serves as the inspiration for the creation of \"Toegye, Gyeomjae, Chusa (2023).\"
Hofstadter investigates the neural mechanisms of cognition in the lives and works of Gödel, Escher, and Bach.
Austrian mathematician Kurt Gödel (1906-1978) poses profound philosophical inquiries about formal logic, mathematical logic, and the foundations of mathematical systems.
Dutch printmaker Moritz Escher (1898-1972) ventures beyond the boundaries of reality and imagination by blending mathematical principles and aesthetics within the realm of surrealism.
German composer Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) translates the counter-reformation and the upheaval that affected Northern Europe after the Thirty Years\' War (1618-1648) into dynamic, unconventional, and sensuous Baroque auditory art.


\"Toegye, Gyeomjae, Chusa (2023)\" is an encounter of philosophy and aesthetics recorded from an artist\'s monograph perspective.
Toegye Yi Hwang (1501-1570), a Confucian scholar of the Joseon Dynasty, firmly establishes the dualism of principle and vital forces based on the theory of principle superiority, which dualizes li-ki into enduring li and ephemeral qi.
Gyeomjae Jeong Seon (1676-1759), a painter from the later period of the Joseon Dynasty, reinterprets the monism of principle and vital forces, viewing it as a single attribute or order of qi\'s action, and opens up a new horizon in the world of landscape painting.
Chusa Kim Jeong-hui (1786-1856), a scholar from the later period of the Joseon Dynasty, creates an ideal new calligraphy style based on his research in Qing Dynasty classical studies, which harmonizes the monism of principle and vital forces of Yulgok and the dualism of principle and vital forces of Toegye, free from the constraints of theoretical Confucianism.
Attempting individual reflections on the lives, scholarship, philosophy, and aesthetics of Toegye, Gyeomjae, and Chusa, it approaches the fusion of clarity and universality.
Establishing a cosmology based on the dualism of principle and vital Forces, I seek to find the essence of aesthetics in the movement of qi, which is the change in the universe.

Leadership under pressure: the personal account of the commander of the Royal Naval Task Group deployed to Libya in 2011.In April 2011, the newly created Royal Navy Response Force Task Group deployed to the Mediterranean to provide a range of military options in response to the Arab Spring. For the next six months the group planned and prepared for a range of potential operations including noncombatant evacuations from Libya, Yemen and Syria, maritime interdiction operations off the Libyan coast, and amphibious landings.  On 3 June the group began launching attack helicopter strikes into Libya and in the nights that followed planned 47 and executed 22 strikes destroying a range of targets including: 54 vehicles, 2 rigid hull boats, 2 BM 21 rocket launchers, 4 main battle tanks, 1 zsu antiaircraft vehicle and 3 command and control nodes. The operation saw the first operational use of Apaches from the sea and the first embarkation of US Army combat search and rescue teams and Blackhawk helicopters in an RN warship.  This is a personal account by the Group’s Commander, which brings to life the challenges of command – including authorizing strikes and mitigating risk to UK aircrew – in a complex and challenging environment. It reveals how closely the RN Group worked with its French counterpart, the support provided by the United States, together with the complexity of working alongside NATO and of simultaneously dealing with a range of UK authorities.  This is a story of leadership under pressure and the remarkable professionalism of all involved and the bravery of Army aircrew. It was modern defense and joinery at its best – British Army and USAF helicopters operating from RN ships, supported by Fleet Air Arm aircraft and fixed wing jets as part of a largely air campaign.

While the fight over gay marriage has been bitterly contested and debated for much of the 21st century, it’s still somewhat difficult to believe that just 50 years ago, homosexual activity was illegal in nearly every state in America. Homosexuals faced discrimination that surpassed that of even African-Americans or suspected Communists, and their lifestyles were so taboo that they were typically considered to be a security risk because it would be so easy for someone who wished to harm the country to blackmail them. In 1950, a Senate Subcommittee on Investigations reported, “In further considering the general suitability of perverts as Government employees, it is generally believed that those who engage in overt acts of perversion lack the emotional stability of normal persons. In addition there is an abundance of evidence to sustain the conclusion that indulgence in acts of sex perversion weakens the moral fiber of an individual to a degree that he is not suitable for a position of responsibility. Most of the authorities agree and our investigation has shown that the presence of a sex pervert in a Government agency tends to have a corrosive influence upon his fellow employees. These perverts will frequently attempt to entice normal individuals to engage in perverted practices. This is particularly true in the case of young and impressionable people who might come under the influence of a pervert. Government officials have the responsibility of keeping this type of corrosive influence out of the agencies under their control. It is particularly important that the thousands of young men and women who are brought into Federal jobs not be subjected to that type of influence while in the service of the Government. One homosexual can pollute a Government office.” Indeed, in the decades that followed, the FBI kept lists of known homosexuals, and law enforcement agencies regularly raided known gay bars and other similar establishments.
