Restorative practice is emerging in healthcare settings and systems as a highly effective means of improving relationships and enabling positive change. It consists of a set of theories, principles, skills and processes that shape our thinking around the way we interact with others. When restorative practice is adopted consistently within and between teams, it becomes 'the way we do things round here', a set of restorative practice 'habits' that we all recognise, use and refer to.
Restorative Practice at Workidentifies a set of six complementary habits which will help to change and improve everyday communications, conversations and accountability in healthcare. These habits demonstrate how restorative practice can help toimprove day-to-day communications, in the form of behaviour, language and conversations, ease some of the daily challenges faced in healthcare and foster more effective working relationships, potentially leading to improvements in patient care and patient safety. They are:

    - Navigating the Mountain: Looking beyond challenging behaviour
    - Recognising Needs: Noticing, and responding to, needs and unmet needs
    - Engaging Brains and Behaviours: Informing our responses to outward behaviours
    - Remembering the Relational Window: Solving problems together
    - Running Circle Meetings: An alternative meeting process
    - Drawing on Restorative Enquiry: Processing incidents and problemsLesley firmly believes that restorative practice habits can ease the current pressures on the health service by enabling better relationships, improved communication and a focus on positive mental health. It can also be part of key solutions: staff engagement and retention, team cohesion, patient safety and care, culture change and improvement.
The book offers practical and engaging takeaways to helpyou get started with restorative practice and includes reflective learning opportunities and transferrable lessons supported by evidence from case studies and contributions from experienced healthcare professionals.
The aim ofRestorative Practice at Workis to make a notable, positive difference to your daily workplace experience, whether you are a public-facing receptionist, member of a clinical team, administrator, manager, senior leader, cleaner or consultant, or, indeed if you have any other role in healthcare. This book will challenge and support your knowledge, understanding and thinking around restorative practice as a workplace philosophy in healthcare.

For decades, we've gotten away with a worn-out leadership style that we keep reworking in an attempt to make it function in our changing environment. However, incremental changes in a defective model will no longer be effective at some point. While our world has evolved, our leadership style has not. It is time for a new leadership style—one that is relevant to our times. Workforce expert Stephen M.R. Covey presents this new leadership style, Trust & Inspire, in his 2022 book of the same name. It is a model that focuses on leaders putting their trust in their teams instead of trying to control and micromanage their every move.

Feudalism was a social, political, and economic system that dominated medieval Europe, particularly from the 9th to the 15th century. Its structure was based on the exchange of land for loyalty, military service, and labor. At its core, feudalism established a hierarchical order in which the king, or monarch, granted land, known as fiefs, to vassals (nobles) in exchange for their service. In turn, these vassals would grant portions of their land to serfs or peasants, who worked the land in return for protection and sustenance. This land-based economy was highly localized, with power concentrated in the hands of a few, and much of daily life revolved around agricultural production.
The decline of feudalism did not happen overnight but was a gradual process influenced by several interconnected factors. Key to its decline was the increasing centralization of power by monarchs. As monarchs gained more control, often through military conquest or strategic marriages, they began to diminish the power of feudal lords. This shift marked the beginning of the nation-state as a powerful political entity, replacing the decentralized feudal system. Additionally, the rise of a money-based economy undermined the land-based economy that feudalism relied upon. The growth of trade, the development of markets, and the emergence of a merchant class further destabilized feudal structures.
Another critical event in the decline of feudalism was the Black Death in the 14th century. The plague decimated large portions of Europe’s population, resulting in severe labor shortages. This, in turn, weakened the traditional feudal relationships between lords and serfs. With fewer workers available, peasants were able to demand better conditions, higher wages, or even freedom from their obligations. This shift in labor dynamics helped to weaken the power of feudal lords, who could no longer rely on a subjugated, large labor force to maintain their estates.
