Sinopsis

Overcoming Toxic Relationships provides a roadmap for anyone caught in destructive relationship patterns, offering insights into toxic behavior, relationship advice, and strategies for building healthier connections. The book uniquely emphasizes self-compassion and forgiveness, crucial elements often overlooked when addressing such challenging dynamics. It illuminates how low self-esteem and fear of abandonment can perpetuate these cycles, while also highlighting the importance of establishing healthy boundaries. This book explores the psychology of toxic relationships, drawing from attachment theory and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to explain why these patterns emerge and persist. It uses real-world examples to illustrate how societal norms and communication skills can contribute to unequal power dynamics. Chapters progress from identifying toxic behaviors and understanding their roots to providing actionable steps for breaking free, improving communication, and fostering self-worth. Ultimately, Overcoming Toxic Relationships aims to empower readers to recognize and escape harmful relationship patterns. It emphasizes the importance of understanding both the dynamics of power and control and the need for self-empowerment. Unlike other self-help guides, this book focuses on evidence-based strategies, providing practical guidance for rebuilding trust and preventing future involvement in toxic cycles, whether in family relationships, romantic partnerships, or professional settings.

"A revolutionary diary that parses the lines of sex and power, in language that pushes itself around on the page like paint. With echoes of Emma Goldman's if I can't dance, Lardeux's revolution has fucking at its core. The Second Substance is fleshy, cinematic, intuitive." – Tamara Faith Berger, author of Queen Solomon

“A nomadic miscellany of gruff scavengers and would-be pioneers has commandeered the derelict filling station at 69 Rue Principale—an anonymous sensualist and moonlighting authoritarian among them—all jockeying for position at the nexus of self-determination and fate. In Anne Lardeux’s enigmatic debut, presented here in a translation by Pablo Strauss, the constant friction between societal strictures and communal revision spark a series of disorderly experiments, abstract epiphanies blasting off in every direction. The Second Substance is a novel about overriding our programming, rewriting our code in order to initiate an even more radical set of protocols for eroticism, destruction, and rebirth.” – Justin Walls, Bookshop.org

    10 Ancient Roman Concepts That...

These ancient concepts come from an assortment of wisdom found in the time of the Roman Empire include:
The Tacitus Razor: “If you want to know who controls you, see who you’re not allowed to criticize.” This is how comedians accidently reveal a society's hierarchy—they call everyone naked, and soon discover who the king is.
The Slavery Syndrome. Roman historian Sallust: “Few men desire liberty; most men wish only for a just master.” Genuine liberty means making decisions 24/7; parsing right from wrong; solving pesky dilemmas using nothing but one’s own mind.
The Polybius Warning: 2nd century B.C. historian Polybius warned that a falling birthrate precedes civilizational collapse. Fewer births mean men and women have checked out. Polybius believed the Greek civilization fell due to its “low birth rate…”
The Pliny Principle: “It is wonderful how the mind is stirred and quickened into activity by brisk bodily exercise.”
The Uses of Folly. Roman historian Herodotus: “If a man insisted always on being serious, and never allowed himself a bit of fun and relaxation, he would go mad.”
    6. The Vitruvius Rule: Modern architects love asymmetrical structures, but Ancient Roman architect Vitruvius said a building out of proportions is like a deformed body. Nature herself “composed the human body” and the rest of creation using “due proportions.” The Vitruvius Rule: No symmetry? Off to cemetery.

    Kofun Period - The Mysterious...

The Kofun Period, which lasted from approximately 250 to 600 AD, marks a significant era in early Japanese history. This period is named after the distinct burial mounds, or "kofun," that were constructed during this time. These mounds vary in size and shape but are most commonly recognized for their keyhole-like design. The Kofun Period is pivotal as it represents a time of political consolidation, the development of social structures, and the emergence of a powerful ruling elite that would lay the foundation for the imperial system in Japan.
The beginning of the Kofun Period is closely tied to the formation of more complex societies in the Japanese archipelago. By this time, a system of chiefdoms had developed, and the early Yamato state began to emerge as a dominant political force. The period sees the consolidation of power under a centralized leadership, which eventually paved the way for the establishment of the imperial family that still exists today. During the Kofun Period, society transitioned from small, localized groups to more organized and hierarchical structures, a shift that was reflected in the elaborate tombs built for the elites.
The most notable characteristic of the Kofun Period is the construction of large burial mounds for the ruling class. These tombs were not only elaborate final resting places for powerful individuals but also symbolized the political power and religious authority of the deceased. The kofun mounds varied in size, with some measuring several hundred meters in length. These tombs were often surrounded by moats and would contain a wealth of grave goods, such as weapons, jewelry, and pottery, which reflected both the material culture of the time and the importance of the individual being buried.
