The roots of the American Dream reach back to the earliest colonial settlements, when European settlers arrived with hopes of building a better life far from the constraints of their homelands. For many, the New World offered something previously unimaginable—land ownership, religious freedom, and the possibility of rising above the station into which they were born. These opportunities, though limited to a select group at the time, laid the foundation for the evolving idea that anyone could succeed through hard work and determination. In this fertile but dangerous land, ambition was a necessity, and the early colonists began to shape a cultural identity around individualism and perseverance.
As the colonies grew and developed, tensions with Britain intensified, giving rise to revolutionary ideas that would further fuel the American Dream. The rejection of monarchy and the assertion of natural rights became central to the vision of a new nation. The Revolution itself was not just a fight for independence but also a declaration that ordinary people had the right to govern themselves. The rhetoric of the time emphasized liberty, equality, and the pursuit of happiness—concepts that would become permanently embedded in the national consciousness. The struggle to gain freedom was brutal and uneven, but the ideals expressed during this time continued to inspire generations to believe in the possibility of social mobility and personal fulfillment.
One of the most significant documents in American history, the Declaration of Independence, formalized the promise of the American Dream. Its bold claim that "all men are created equal" introduced a national aspiration that transcended the immediate political conflict. Although in practice this equality was far from realized, the statement set a powerful ideal against which future Americans would measure their progress.

History didn't end. Democracy didn't triumph. America’s leading role in the world is no longer assured. Instead, authoritarian rule is on the rise, and the global order established after 1945 is under attack. This is the phenomenon Katie Stallard tackles in Dancing on
Bones as she examines how the leaders of China, Russia, and North Korea manipulate the past to serve the present and secure the future of authoritarian rule.

Russia has annexed Crimea, started a war in eastern Ukraine, and repeatedly massed troops on its borders. China has stepped up war games near Taiwan and militarized the South China Sea, while North Korea has resumed missile testing and blood-curdling threats
against the United States. These three states consistently top lists of threats to US and European security, and yet the leaders of all three insist that it is their country that is threatened, rewriting history and exploiting the memory of the wars of the last century to
justify their actions and shore up popular support. Since coming to power, Xi Jinping has almost doubled the length of China’s World War II, Vladimir Putin has elevated the memory of the Great Patriotic War to the status of a national religion, and Kim Jong Un has invested
vast sums in rebuilding war museums in his impoverished state, while those who try to challenge the official version of history are silenced and jailed. But this didn’t start with Putin, Xi, and Kim, and it won’t end with them.

Drawing on first-hand, on-the-ground reporting, Dancing on Bones argues that if we want to understand where these three nuclear powers are heading, we must understand the stories they are telling their citizens about the past.

In the spirit of medieval writer Chaucer, all human activity lies within the artist’s scope, the History of Man Series uses medicine as a jumping off point to explore precisely that, all history, all science, all human activity since the beginning of time. The jumping off style of writing takes the reader, the listener into worlds unknown, always returning to base, only to jump off again. History of Man are stories and tales of nearly everything.
The First History of Man uses infection in general—bacteria, viruses, fungus, parasites, epidemics & pandemics, COVID-19—to lay the foundation for the next five books, narratives and stories that delve deeper into human infectious diseases. This first volume jumps off into accounts of the Big Bang Theory—the real one, but also the sitcom—the origin of the Universe, from atoms to DNA to us and how exactly it happened. In our journey we’ll explore Einstein and Newton who were probably aliens (he said jokingly), the Roman Empire, British history and all those wives of King Henry VIII, the why and how of the Protestant Reformation, why Pluto lost its planet status in our solar system, what exactly is the sweet spot of a solar system, all the while digging up some archeology, and even paying a visit with Dr. Livingstone, I presume. We’ll trudge from the top of Everest, the highest point on Earth, to the bottom of the Mariana Trench, the lowest point on Earth, and LUA in between, the Last Universal Ancestor that gave rise to all life on Earth.

We broke our new series on learning Spanish down into different learning stages. Start with the "Lower Beginner" books followed by the "Beginner" and "Upper Beginner" books. Next, progress to the "Intermediate" series, then test and reinforce your knowledge with the "Conversations" series.
This audiobook is divided into units. While it provides different learning patterns and accommodates various needs, this audiobook focuses on helping you improve your ability to understand, speak, and memorise Spanish.
In Unit 1 you will hear Spanish decoded with each syllable spoken very slowly and clearly with repetition. Immediately before each sentence is spoken, you will hear the translation, so you will always understand what is being said.
Unit 2 focuses solely on increasing your listening ability, which will improve your abilities to engage in dialogue with a native Spanish speaker. This chapter requires you to listen very carefully to nuances in the language.
By Unit 3 you will already notice progress in your abilities to speak and understand Spanish. The spoken translation is followed by two repetitions in Spanish at a completely natural speed. While you are learning to process naturally spoken Spanish, Units 3 and 4 will help you memorise new vocabulary and full sentences.
In Unit 5 you can test yourself on how much you have learned. If you are having difficulties, we suggest you revisit the listening, speaking, or memorisation section of Units 1, 2 3 or 4, according to what you need more help with.

From the award-winning author of On Fragile Waves comes an inspirational, surprising guide to creation and creativity, and how both bring us closer to God.   Centuries ago, sound theology and good fiction were friends and not strangers. Decades ago, authors strove not for self-expression and self-disclosure but for a mastery of craft and language and books that transformed the reader with wisdom and love. In more recent years, the old ideals have been exchanged for lesser ones.   Few guides to writing, which tend to focus on mechanics, point of view, and plot, address the more important matters of meaning, depth, and heart. But it is the latter qualities that make a book a blessing and gift to both writer and reader. Like Christ’s invitation to follow, they demand a risk and sacrifice of the self and all it holds dear. Writers from George MacDonald to James Baldwin understood this, but in recent years this understanding has been lost. Making old things new, this book proposes an ethics of reading, writing, and living based on truth and love.  Break, Blow, Burn, & Make returns the literary conversation to the practices of co-creation with God. Part bugle call, part compass for writing and for life, and part love song to the books that set us on fire, it offers those who are willing to receive it the courage to live, read, and write more deeply and honestly.
