Synopsis

Waterloo is a stirring short story by Arthur Conan Doyle (sometimes dramatized) that pays homage to the valor of soldiers at the Battle of Waterloo. Set decades after the 1815 battle, the story is told through the reminiscences of Corporal Gregory Brewster, an aged veteran now living in humble circumstances. As an "old soldier" entertaining a young visitor, Brewster recounts the dramatic moments of Waterloo with pride – how he held the line with the Scots Guards and captured a French eagle standard in the thick of combat. Doyle imbues the tale with warm patriotism and respect for the common fighting man. In poignant scenes, Brewster's memories come alive, and he even dons his threadbare uniform and medal as he relives the glory. The climax reveals Brewster's heroism (he won the Victoria Cross for saving the regimental colors) and underscores themes of honor and remembrance. Waterloo showcases Doyle's talent for historical fiction on a small scale, blending factual detail with emotional resonance to ensure that the sacrifices of 1815 are not forgotten by later generations.
