Sinopse

In "The Great Keinplatz Experiment and Other Tales of Twilight and the Unseen," Arthur Conan Doyle invites readers into a realm where the boundaries of reality and the supernatural blur. This collection features stories that explore themes of psychic phenomena, spiritualism, and the enigmas of human consciousness. With an engaging narrative style, Doyle blends meticulous scientific inquiry and imaginative storytelling, presenting tales that are rich in psychological depth and moral introspection. The juxtaposition of rationalism and mysticism reflects the late Victorian fascination with the unknown, a context in which Doyle's work frequently resided, often challenging the prevailing scientific paradigms of his time. Conan Doyle, primarily celebrated for his creation of Sherlock Holmes, was a man of diverse interests, from medicine to spiritualism. His own encounters with the occult and his advocacy for psychic research significantly informed the themes of this collection. The stories encapsulate his lifelong quest for understanding beyond the visible world, driven by both personal experiences and an underlying skepticism towards materialism, making these tales not just fictional narratives but also philosophical inquiries. Readers who relish the intersection of mystery and the metaphysical will find "The Great Keinplatz Experiment" particularly rewarding. Doyle's storytelling is both thought-provoking and captivating, inviting an exploration of the unseen forces that may shape our existence. This collection is essential for aficionados of gothic literature and those intrigued by the paranormal, positioning itself as a profound commentary on humanity's eternal quest for knowledge.

In midwinter, an aspiring politician finds himself suddenly deprived of human contact.
Newcomers to a town are strangely reminiscent of people lost in a recent flood.
Demonstrators on a peace march see the faces of sleeping children in the snow.
A failed musician meets his own ancestors getting off a midnight train. The Terrible Changes is a journey through the shadow-realm between reality and dream, between clarity and madness, between the living and the dead. In Joel Lane's fiction, the weird is a symbolic language expressing the chilling beauty, sadness and mystery of real life, combining the supernatural with themes of human loss, passion, solitude and despair, in the tradition of Robert Aickman, John Ramsey Campbell, and M. John Harrison.
From 'The Brand' (1983) to 'Alouette' (2008), these stories span a quarter-century of writing: urban horror tales, elegiac ghost stories, erotic reveries and psychological fugues. Long unavailable, The Terrible Changes is now back in print for a new audience, adding to Joel Lane's legacy as a true master of the weird.

Let’s be clear. We are all equal under the law. However, even in these more modern times that is not an absolute and still remains a distant ambition for many.

In the days when Britain ruled the waves and bestrode the world as its policeman and plunderer in chief it also subjugated half of its own people to second class status. Women were chattel and property. There were some exceptions based on wealth and birthright but for the overwhelming majority your lot was to fall in with the rules and do as you were told. Many did.

But whilst male society sought to place obstacles in the path to equality, it could not deny their literary talents, which many times they circumvented by using male pseudonyms. However, the soaring sales of magazines and periodicals during the Victorian Age meant they had voracious appetites for literature, whatever the sex of its gender.

Dozens of authors appeared to fill the need. Narratives had new ideas. Characters were emboldened by societal changes and the female voice taking responsibility.

The women included here are talents that dazzle. Put them up against anyone and they rise to the top. Whether they remain with an avid readership today or faded to obscurity with the passing of the times their quality remains undimmed.
