Summary

The Complete "Sherlock Holmes" Stories, encompassing four novels and fifty-six short stories, presents the pinnacle of Arthur Conan Doyle's literary genius and his groundbreaking contribution to the detective genre. Set against the backdrop of Victorian and Edwardian England, these works intricately weave together atmospheric settings, compelling narratives, and well-crafted puzzles that challenge both the protagonist and the reader. Doyle's distinctive style blends realism with an engaging, methodical storytelling approach, elevating Holmes not only as a fictional detective but as a cultural icon. The inclusion of "An Intimate Study of Sherlock Holmes" further enriches the text, offering readers a glimpse into Doyle'Äôs fascination with his enigmatic creation. Arthur Conan Doyle, a physician by training and an avid enthusiast of spiritualism and the occult, exhibited a remarkable ability to translate human psychology and deductive reasoning into his narratives. His creation of Sherlock Holmes was inspired by Dr. Joseph Bell, one of his professors, whose keen observational skills greatly influenced Doyle's writing. As a prolific author, Doyle sought to explore the boundaries of human intellect and morality, thus making the Holmes stories not just simple mysteries but profound reflections on human nature. For readers seeking an immersive literary experience, The Complete "Sherlock Holmes" Stories is an essential addition to any bookshelf. This compendium not only showcases Doyle's brilliance in crafting intricate plots and unforgettable characters but also invites readers to engage with moral and philosophical dilemmas embedded in the stories. Victor Canning’s light-hearted and cleverly plotted novella set on the beautiful French Riviera

Young Paul Ashcroft has travelled to the beautiful French Riviera. His goal: to make a lot of money. His methods: more than questionable. Following his motto ‘the world owes me a living’, he steals and swindles – using what he needs for himself and passing on the rest to those less fortunate.

After coming across the beautiful Villa Triton, he disguises himself as M. Durobat, a middle-aged Frenchman, to inspect the villa and to pawn the owner’s ornaments and paintings. At the local Casino, he becomes acquainted with the rich ladies of the resort. As he steals their jewellery, he blames the robberies on 'Gringo the Greek', a small crook he knew a long time ago.

But just as Paul's schemes and tricks start to be fruitful and he falls in love with the intriguing Elise Benoit, the real Gringo the Greek appears on the scene, ready to take on the cunning thief who has been blaming him all this time…

Herbert George Wells was an English writer. Prolific in many genres, he wrote dozens of novels, short stories, and works of social commentary, history, satire, biography, and autobiography. His work also included two books on recreational war games. Wells is now best remembered for his science fiction novels and is often called the "father of science fiction", along with Jules Verne.During his own lifetime, however, he was most prominent as a forward-looking, even prophetic social critic who devoted his literary talents to the development of a progressive vision on a global scale. A futurist, he wrote a number of utopian works and foresaw the advent of aircraft, tanks, space travel, nuclear weapons, satellite television, and something resembling the World Wide Web. His science fiction imagined time travel, alien invasion, invisibility, and biological engineering. Wells's earliest specialized training was in biology, and his thinking on ethical matters took place in a specifically and fundamentally Darwinian context. He was also an outspoken Socialist from a young age, often (but not always, as at the beginning of the First World War) sympathizing with pacifist views. His later works became increasingly political and didactic, and he wrote little science fiction, while he sometimes indicated on official documents that his profession was that of a journalist. Novels such as Kipps and The History of Mr. Polly, which describe lower-middle-class life, led to the suggestion that he was a worthy successor to Charles Dickens, but Wells described a range of social strata and even attempted a diagnosis of English society as a whole.
