The Adventures of Gerard is a collection of humorous historical short stories featuring Brigadier Etienne Gerard, Arthur Conan Doyle's flamboyant French cavalry officer serving under Napoleon. Published in 1903, these stories continue the exploits Doyle began in The Exploits of Brigadier Gerard (1896), following the brave but comically vain Gerard through the Napoleonic Wars. Each adventure finds Gerard in a swashbuckling predicament across Europe, often narrating his own deeds with over-the-top pride and a touch of self-deprecating wit. In one story, Gerard might infiltrate a Spanish fortress to capture a British general, only to end up dueling an enraged matador.
