Summary

Hilda Wade is a medical mystery novel largely written by Grant Allen and completed by Arthur Conan Doyle after Allen's death in 1899. The story features Hilda Wade, a quick-witted and courageous nurse who possesses an uncanny intuition for diagnosis – what the narrator calls "premonitory wisdom." Set in London's St. Margaret's Hospital, the novel unfolds as a series of episodic adventures in which Hilda aids (and often outshines) the doctors in solving medical puzzles and criminal intrigues. From detecting a poisoner on the ward to uncovering the tragic secret behind her own father's fate, Hilda proves a formidable "lady detective" in a starched apron. Doyle, fulfilling Allen's outline, ensured the final chapter tied up Hilda's personal quest: exposing the wrongdoing of the charismatic but sinister Professor Sebastian, under whom she serves. The novel stands out for making a female protagonist the hero of deduction – a rarity in its time – and for its blend of medical drama with Sherlockian sleuthing (indeed, Hilda's logical prowess invites comparison to Holmes, but with a warmer bedside manner). Hilda Wade is both a gripping hospital thriller and a showcase of Doyle and Allen's shared progressive view that a woman could be the smartest character in the room.

"The Piscatorial Farce of the Stolen Stomach" is a short story from Dorothy Sayers' book, Lord Peter Views the Body.Thomas MacPherson, a final year medical student in Scotland, shows Wimsey the very strange legacy his Great-Uncle Joseph Ferguson left him. Great-Uncle Joseph, who died at the age of 95 by throwing himself out of a sixth-floor window, bequeathed his grand-nephew only his stomach and alimentary organs, with their contents, preserved in a bottle. Wimsey suspects there is more to the story than an eccentric old man's whims, especially when he learns that Great-Uncle Joseph was said to be very rich but withdrew more than £84,000 (nearly £5.5 million today) from the bank in the years leading up to his death. The only other heir, one Robert Ferguson, is a greedy wastrel, and was upset to receive only a pittance...

It’s hard to catch a killer when the only witness is a tree.
“Comprehensive, well-researched, and above all mesmerizing”—Readers’ Favorite
In 1853, after Catherine Miller is murdered for daring to become a doctor in a field full of men, a molecular fusion between human decay and natural rebirth transforms her into a Northern Red Oak. One hundred and seventy years later, she remains a mute but sentient tree, rooted near a secluded Northeast Ohio house. After she watches in horror as the newest homeowner murders one of his PhD students, Catherine is resolved, somehow, to see that justice gets served.
Fortunately, present-day Catherine has an unwitting ally: Lani Whitaker, a fourth-generation detective facing mandatory retirement and sick of being treated like a dried-up relic by her young chief of police. When the body of that same PhD student turns up in the woods, Lani is determined to solve the case and go out with a win.
Two women, generations apart, linked to each other through murder. Can solving a twenty-first-century homicide shed light on a nineteenth-century killer?
