Summary

In "Father Payne," Arthur Christopher Benson crafts an introspective narrative that explores the profound dimensions of friendship, intellectual growth, and spiritual quest through the lens of the titular character, Father Payne. The novel is marked by its rich, evocative prose and philosophical dialogues, seamlessly embedding themes of educational enlightenment and moral introspection. Set against the backdrop of late Victorian England, Benson intertwines the social reformist ethos of the era with a deep exploration of personal identity, reflecting on the transformative power of mentorship in a rapidly changing world. Arthur Christopher Benson was a multifaceted figure—an accomplished author, critic, and the son of the influential cleric Edward White Benson. His exposure to diverse intellectual influences and the navigations of his own faith journey imbue "Father Payne" with a sense of authenticity and depth. Benson's own experiences at the universities of Cambridge and his involvement in literary circles shaped his understanding of the complexities of education and morality, allowing him to craft a narrative that resonated with his contemporaries and continues to do so. This novel is a recommended read for those seeking a profound exploration of human relationships and the essence of wisdom passed down through generations. Benson's eloquent prose and insightful characterizations render "Father Payne" an enriching experience for readers interested in the philosophical undercurrents of literature and the enduring impact of guidance and mentorship.

Learning to communicate and manage frustration is part of growing up. But some children don’t master those skills. Suppose their frequent angry outbursts and aggressive behaviors interfere with family life, making friends, or school performance. In that case, they may have the oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), which, by some estimates, affects up to 16 percent of school-age children. Though no statistics are available for younger children, experts say that most children with ODD show signs of the disorder in the preschool years.Oppositional defiant disorder describes a pattern of angry/irritable mood, argumentative/defiant behavior, and/or spitefulness that lasts at least six months in multiple settings. It occurs almost daily in children younger than 5 and at least once a week in older children. (By 6 or 7, most children have learned to express anger in productive, socially acceptable ways.)Examples of anger and irritable mood include frequent loss of temper and being easily annoyed or resentful. Argumentative and defiant behavior includes refusing to obey rules, continually challenging authority, being deliberately annoying to others, and/or blaming others for mistakes or bad behavior. He says that many children with ODD have other mental health challenges, such as anxiety, mood disorders, and language and learning disorders. Trauma, parenting, styles, and other environmental issues may also contribute. As with many mental health conditions, ODD occurs on a continuum. Children with mild ODD may show symptoms only at home or only at school. Moderate ODD may be the diagnosis when a child’s ODD behaviors happen in two settings. ODD is classified as severe when the acting out is seen in three or more locations.

At Terezín, many children sang for the Nazi officials and the Red Cross. They were used as propaganda tools, between 1943 and 1944, to make the world believe that Hitler had given a "paradise" to the Jews. Only around 100 of the 15,000 innocent people who passed through this transit camp survived.
Ela Stein Weissberger, deported at the age of 11, is one of the few survivors. In Hans Krása's opera Brundibár (The Bumblebee) performed at the camp, she played the role of the Cat, the rebellious animal who attacks the mustached monster in the hope of winning the war! Her poignant testimony gives voice once again to the courageous, hopeful children who left 4,500 drawings, diaries and poems at Terezín.
Like an internal road movie, the author offers a parallel narrative—she looks back on her own family history, her search for Ela, her anecdotes from the shooting of a documentary film, and she speaks up for all children targeted by hatred.

A restorative and resonant memoir of a year in the life of an aging shepherd

For 50 years, Barbara McLean has tended a flock of Border Leicester sheep on her small Ontario farm, Lambsquarters. In Shepherd’s Sight she shares the crises, pleasures, and challenges of farm life over the course of a year. Now in her 70s, McLean faces a new problem: how much longer she can continue with the physically taxing work that is her central source of meaning and satisfaction.

Through her unsentimental gaze, we witness the highs and heartbreaks of delivering and rearing lambs, the shearing and spinning of wool, the wildlife in the woods (and occasionally in the house), and the garden produce moving from seed to harvest to table. Even after half a century on this land, McLean is still making fresh observations, and she shares them in evocative, elegant prose. As she moves through the calendar year, she also reflects on years past, offering a long view on climate, stewardship, and agriculture.

With its vivid description and absorbing storytelling, Shepherd’s Sight offers an unforgettable glimpse of a life lived on the land.

The fully revised and updated fourth edition of the classic Common Sense Economics.

As the global economy recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic and debates over the future of work challenge our long-held preconceptions about what careers and the market can be, learning the basics of economics has never been more essential. Principles such as gains from trade, the role of profit and loss, and the secondary effects of government spending, taxes, and borrowing risk continue to be critically important to the way America's economy functions, and critically important to understand for those hoping to further their professional lives—even their personal lives. Common Sense Economics discusses these key points and theories and more, using them to show how any listener can make wiser personal choices and form more informed positions on policy.

Now in its fourth edition, this classic from James D. Gwartney, Dwight R. Lee, Tawni Hunt Ferrarini, Joseph P. Calhoun, and Jane Shaw Stroup has been fully updated to include commentary on the effects of the pandemic on the global economy and the workplace; it offers insight into political processes and the many ways in which economics informs policy, illuminating our world and what might be done to make it better.
