Summary

Set against the opulent backdrop of a luxurious London hotel, Arnold Bennett's 'The Grand Babylon Hotel' intricately weaves a narrative of intrigue, hospitality, and the complexities of human relationships. The novel, steeped in a detailed realism reminiscent of naturalism, serves not only as a social commentary on Edwardian society but also as an exploration of the zeitgeist of early 20th-century Britain. Bennett's sharp wit and keen observations are infused throughout the text, showcasing his mastery of dialogue and character development within a vividly rendered setting, where the lives of both staff and guests intersect in unexpected ways. Arnold Bennett, a prominent literary figure of the early 1900s, was deeply influenced by his own experiences in the industrial town of Stoke-on-Trent, which colored much of his work. His background in journalism and keen interest in the nuances of everyday life enabled him to craft narratives that delve into the habitual realities of characters, reflecting both their ambitions and vulnerabilities. Bennett's writing style embodies a unique blend of realism and romance, influenced by his own travels and love for urban life, which are evident in the hotel scenes he depicts. 'The Grand Babylon Hotel' is an essential read for those interested in early modern literature and the intersection of class, culture, and the human experience. This novel invites readers to immerse themselves in the elegant yet tumultuous world of hospitality, where every character's story is intertwined with the grand narrative of life itself. It is a compelling exploration of societal norms that remains resonant even today.

Love is the beginning of everything. And the end.
Haunted by dreams of the boy whose life she shattered and burdened by dark family secrets she's only just begun to understand, Private Investigator Winter Black is trying to keep her life from falling apart. With her husband on a yearlong break from the FBI, the bills are piling up, and Winter has no choice but to take on even the most mundane cases. Serving a summons should be easy.
Until the man she served is found dead the next day. His wife too.
The man, a local appliance store owner, faced financial ruin pending the legal case, leading authorities to suspect a murder-suicide. Winter doesn’t buy that he killed himself or his wife. In fact, she’d seen the anticipation in his eyes as they packed for a vacation together—hardly the behavior of a man about to end it all. When the employee behind the lawsuit goes missing, Winter is convinced.
Someone murdered the couple. But who?
As she digs deeper, the bodies start to pile up. People connected to the case are being picked off one by one, and Winter can’t shake the feeling that she’s getting closer to something dangerous—something that wants to stay hidden. Someone’s playing a twisted game, and Winter’s caught right in the middle.
With a target on her back.
The mystery and suspense continue with Winter’s Snare, the heart-stopping sixth book in the Winter Black Season Two series. It’s a reminder that love endures all things. Except murder.

"Mediocrity knows nothing higher than itself; but talent instantly recognizes genius." ~ The Valley of Fear

The Valley of Fear is the fourth and final Sherlock Holmes novel by British writer Arthur Conan Doyle. It is loosely based on the Molly Maguires and Pinkerton agent James McParland. The story was first published in Strand Magazine between September 1914 and May 1915. The first book edition was copyrighted in 1914, and it was first published by George H. Doran Company in New York on 27 February 1915, and illustrated by Arthur I. Keller.

Doyle said the iconic book had "two parts and a coda". The novel has a number of major themes, including "problems of ethical ambiguity", and attempts to comment seriously on terrorist activity as profiled by American union struggles. Critics have shown how the American union struggles deal with similar issues in the contemporary political situation in Ireland.

Born in 1859, Arthur Conan Doyle is the author most famous for creating the detective Sherlock Holmes and is renowned as the world's greatest crime fiction writer. Spending his childhood in Scotland, his first career choice was to be a doctor, and indeed he ended up with his own medical practice. It was during the failure of this first business venture that Doyle began writing to pass the time. With the creation of Sherlock Holmes, Doyle embarked on a series of crime stories that brought new levels of realism to a marginalized genre. He also became a real-life detective on occasion, personally investigating two crimes that eventually led to the release of the accused men. His Sherlock Holmes stories have found enduring popularity and have seen countless Television, Stage, and film adaptations over the course of the last century.

In the early 1930s, in southern Georgia, young Billy was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole for the murder of Luke Hampton, a crime young Billy did not commit. During his first years in prison he trained the warden's tracking hounds, and with the help of his favorite hound, Ole Red, Billy escaped and made his way to northern Idaho. After many years of worrying about being caught and wondering who had committed the murder, he told his grandson, Trey, a retired detective, about his past and how he had escaped from prison with the help of Ole Red. Even though the murder had been committed in the 1930s, Trey told his grandfather Bill he would go to Georgia and try to find out who committed the murder. Trey got more than he bargained for when during his investigation of the old murder, he uncovered crime and corruption that had been going on for decades in his grandfather's old hometown of Hardwood, Georgia. Trey's investigation brought to light the person who murdered Luke Hampton so many years earlier and it was a shock and total surprise to him and his grandfather Bill.
