Alfred McLelland Burrage was born in Hillingdon, Middlesex on 1st July, 1889. His father and uncle were both writers, primarily of boy’s fiction, and by age 16 AM Burrage had joined them. The young man had ambitions to write for the adult market too. The money was better and so was his writing.
From 1890 to 1914, prior to the mainstream appeal of cinema and radio the printed word, mainly in magazines, was the foremost mass entertainment. AM Burrage quickly became a master of the market publishing his stories regularly across a number of publications.
By the start of the Great War Burrage was well established but in 1916 he was conscripted to fight on the Western Front. He continued to write during these years documenting his experiences in the classic book War is War by Ex-Private X.
For the remainder of his life Burrage was rarely printed in book form but continued to write and be published on a prodigious scale in magazines and newspapers. In this volume we concentrate on his supernatural stories which are, by common consent, some of the best ever written. Succinct yet full of character each reveals a twist and a flavour that is unsettling…..sometimes menacing….always disturbing.

What happens when a past love resurfaces - and the illusion of intimacy begins to unravel? In “A Dill Pickle” by Katherine Mansfield, a chance meeting in a café brings together two former lovers whose lives have taken very different paths. As they sit across from one another, polite conversation gives way to memory, regret, and subtle emotional power shifts. What begins as nostalgia slowly reveals deeper truths about ego, control, and the quiet wounds left by emotional neglect. Through fragmented dialogue and unspoken tension, Mansfield exposes how love can be distorted by self-absorption, and how one voice can dominate while another fades into silence. The past is revisited not with warmth, but with growing clarity - as one character begins to recognize what was lost, and what was never truly offered. Press play and step into one of her most revealing short stories - where memory is selective, affection is uneven, and freedom begins with understanding.

A young woman who works admissions at a scam for-profit college is navigating the lies she sells for a living when she befriends an elderly applicant. The Best Years of Your Life is a short story from Halle Hill’s Good Women, which delves into the lives of twelve Black women across the Appalachian South. Darkly funny and deeply human, Good Women observes how place, blood ties, generational trauma, obsession, and boundaries―or lack thereof―influence how we navigate our small worlds, and how those worlds so often collide in ways we don’t expect.

The lottery ticket by Anton Chekhov is a short story. As title suggests it revolves around probability of winning lottery. Ivan and his wife are from middle class background. However, at first skeptical Ivan soon finds hope when he sees probability of his wife, Misha has a chance of winning lottery,
The moral of the story is that material possessions and wealth do not bring true happiness, and that greed can lead to bitterness and broken relationships. Instead, the story suggests that people should focus on the love and companionship they have in their lives, rather than obsessing over money and possessions.
