Summary

In 'Russian Classics: Short Stories and Plays,' edited by William Lyon Phelps, readers are presented with an exquisite assemblage of the quintessential works that have shaped Russian literature. This anthology not only provides a panoramic view of the cultural and existential struggles of the eras depicted but does so through the diverse forms of plays and short stories. Phelps' collection boasts the masterpieces of distinguished dramatists and storytellers, featuring gripping works such as Gogol's 'The Inspector General', Andreyev's 'Savva', and Chekhov's 'The Darling,' among others. The literary styles range from the satirical to the deeply philosophical, reflecting the broad spectrum of the human condition while contextualizing the narratives within the rich tradition of Russian writing.

William Lyon Phelps was an ardent admirer of Russian literature, and his passion is palpable in this careful curation of texts. Phelps, a scholarly connoisseur of the world's literary heritage, was likely motivated by a desire to share the profundity and the unique psychological insights of Russian authors with the broader reading public. His knowledge of the genre and apparent enthusiasm for these works create an entryway into an exalted realm of storytelling previously inaccessible to those unfamiliar with the Russian tongue.

This collection is recommended for literary enthusiasts and novices alike, who seek to dive into the depths of Russian culture and explore its myriad facets through the lens of its most brilliant authors. Phelps' anthology opens the door to a world where each play and story transcends time, imparting timeless wisdom, evoking emotion, and fostering an appreciation for the written word. Samuel Langhorne Clemens was born in Florida, Missouri on the 30th November 1835 and is far better known by his pen name of Mark Twain. An American writer and humorist of the first order he is perhaps best known for his novels ‘The Adventures of Tom Sawyer’ and its sequel ‘The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn’ which are often described with that mythic line The Great American Novel.
Twain grew up in Hannibal, Missouri which would later provide the backdrop to these great novels. Apprenticed to a printer he also became a typesetter and then a master riverboat pilot on the Mississippi. Later, heading west with his brother Orion to make his fortune, he failed at gold mining and instead turned to journalism and thence his true calling as a writer of humorous stories where his wit and humor sparkled from every paragraph, his craft evident with every page and punctured target.
A staunch supporter of copyright protections this helped him keep much of the wealth his writing created, though much money was also lost on investments that he pursued in his love for science and technology as well as investing in his own inventions.
Twain was born during a visit by Halley’s comet, and he predicted that he would go out with it as well. He died the day after its subsequent return on 21st April 1910, at his house, Stormfield, located in Redding, Connecticut.

Fresh from the cutting room floor, The Silver Scream exposes the bloodiest behind-the-scenes details of the most gruesome, shocking, true-crime tragedy of our time. Part autopsy, part grisly director’s “cut,” this is the only book with a comprehensive exploration inside the mind of America’s notorious, celluloid-obsessed, rock star turned cinema-copycat murderer, Spencer Charnas. Bayonet Award–winning television reporter Roy Merkin is the only storyteller in possession of the journals scrawled by disgraced psychotherapist Dr. Ian Black. The Silver Scream reconstructs, with unflinching detail, how fiction became fact, art imitated death, and the most horrific movie murders by the likes of Jason, Leatherface, Freddy, Michael, and the rest became real. Merkin courageously slashes open the ghoulish mind and tortured nightmares of Spencer himself, probing deeply, with razor-sharp precision.
