Summary

The earliest of the ten Attic orators, Antiphon of Rhamnus was an important figure in fifth century BC Athenian political and intellectual life. Disliking democracy, he was an ardent oligarch, who helped set up a violent short-lived oligarchy in 411. The restored democracy executed him for treason. Antiphon was a logographer — a professional author of judicial discourse, writing speeches for other people involved in litigation. His surviving speeches reveal a vast knowledge of oratorical studies, a vivid flavour of Athenian court life and gripping details about real life murder cases in the ancient world. Delphi’s Ancient Classics series provides eReaders with the wisdom of the Classical world, with both English translations and the original Greek texts. This eBook presents Antiphon’s complete extant works, with illustrations, informative introductions and the usual Delphi bonus material. (Version 1)

Conflicts have accompanied mankind since time immemorial, and for almost as long people have been trying to limit and deal with them – whether as those affected by them or as professionals with more or less success. For once a system of conflict has developed, once negative expectation structures and with them negative self-evident truths and inherent laws have developed, it becomes increasingly difficult for those involved to escape them: The complexity of our social world, in which it is not easy for communication to find its way, remains unseen. A violated sense of justice, misunderstandings and unfortunate attempts to correct them alternate. One begins to attribute the causes of the conflict to the "person" ("It's you! It's your fault!") and to attribute negative motives to the conflict partner ("You're only doing this because ...!"), who in turn does the same – just like a carousel that slowly gets going. A number of well-studied but little-known psychological processes occur within us when we are in conflict. Outrage at the other person grows, usually unfortunately on both sides. Slowly, the "carousel of outrage and indignation" begins to spin - faster and faster, until...
The book places the various psychological mechanisms in the context of a systemic understanding of conflict and explains ways to slow down the carousel.

The Arawak people trace their origins to the vast and resource-rich region of the Orinoco River basin in present-day Venezuela. As part of the larger Arawakan language family, they were one of the many groups that gradually expanded across South America and into the Caribbean. Their migration was driven by a combination of environmental factors, population growth, and the search for fertile land and abundant resources. Over generations, they navigated rivers, coastlines, and open waters, eventually settling in the islands of the Greater and Lesser Antilles, where they established thriving communities.
Archaeological evidence suggests that the Arawak migration into the Caribbean began around 2000 BCE, with the earliest settlements appearing in the Guianas and Trinidad before spreading to islands such as Hispaniola, Cuba, and Puerto Rico. The seafaring skills of the Arawak were instrumental in their expansion, allowing them to cross large distances using well-crafted dugout canoes. These vessels, some of which could carry dozens of people, enabled them to transport goods, establish trade networks, and maintain cultural connections between islands.
The Arawak developed a rich cultural identity deeply connected to their environment. They were skilled agriculturalists, cultivating staple crops such as cassava, maize, sweet potatoes, and fruits like guava and pineapple. Their farming methods, including slash-and-burn techniques and mound cultivation, allowed them to sustain large populations and support the growth of permanent villages. In addition to agriculture, they engaged in fishing and hunting, making use of the diverse ecosystems found throughout the Caribbean.
