Middlemarch (Book 8: Sunset and Sunrise), A Study of Provincial Life is a novel by English author George Eliot, the pen name of Mary Ann Evans. It appeared in eight installments (volumes) in 1871 and 1872. Set in Middlemarch, a fictional English Midlands town, from 1829 to 1832, it follows distinct, intersecting stories with many characters. Issues include the status of women, the nature of marriage, idealism, self-interest, religion, hypocrisy, political reform, and education. Leavened with comic elements, Middlemarch approaches significant historical events in a realist mode: the Reform Act 1832, early railways, and the accession of King William IV. It looks at medicine of the time and reactionary views in a settled community facing unwelcome change. Eliot began writing the two pieces that formed the novel in 1869–1870 and completed it in 1871. Initial reviews were mixed, but it is now seen widely as her best work and one of the great English novels.

““What is a ‘Bummel’?” said George. “How would you translate it?”
“A ‘Bummel’,” I explained, “I should describe as a journey, long or short, without an end; the only thing regulating it being the necessity of getting back within a given time to the point from which one started.””
Written in 1900, Jerome. K. Jerome’s sequel to his successful “Three Men in a Boat” (1889) retains his same three men; Harris, George, and himself. They are now older, if not always wiser, and decide to embark on a bicycle tour of the Black Forest and its surrounding areas.
Perhaps it is something of the late Victorian Gentleman’s attitude to “foreign parts” that give this sequel a somewhat less frivolous tone than the generally jolly one of three men boating on the familiar Thames. Indeed, the description of the popular practise of German Student duelling (“The Mensur”) is decidedly graphic. Yet despite a less cohesive narrative there are still many equally funny incidents, told with Jerome’s characteristic self-deprecating style. Not least, dear Uncle Podger makes a welcome return as he tries his futile best to leave the house on time for work.
Head Stories Audio presents "Three Men on the Bummel" by Jerome. K. Jerome. Narrated by Simon Hester. With original music.

The Pickwick Papers is the novel that launched Charles Dickens's literary career and remains one of his most joyful and entertaining works. Bursting with humor, warmth, and vivid observation, the book offers a lively portrait of English life in the early Victorian era.

The story follows the genial and good-natured Samuel Pickwick, founder of the Pickwick Club, and his fellow members as they travel through the English countryside in search of knowledge, adventure, and amusement. Along the way, they encounter an unforgettable array of characters—eccentric lawyers, boastful soldiers, sharp-tongued widows, and ordinary people whose quirks and struggles are rendered with affectionate satire.

At the heart of the novel is Dickens's keen eye for human nature. Through comic misadventures, misunderstandings, and courtroom farces, the book gently critiques social pretensions, legal absurdities, and institutional hypocrisy. The introduction of the clever and loyal servant Sam Weller adds depth and wit, creating one of the most beloved partnerships in English literature.

The Pickwick Papers is a celebration of friendship, curiosity, and good humor. Lighthearted yet insightful, it captures the spirit of a society in transition while delighting readers with its timeless comedy and rich storytelling. Endlessly readable and irresistibly charming, the novel stands as a classic introduction to Dickens's enduring genius.

George Orwell, was an English novelist, essayist, journalist and critic. His work is characterized by lucid prose, biting social criticism, total opposition to totalitarianism, and outspoken support of democratic socialism.

Orwell produced literary criticism and poetry, fiction and polemical journalism. He is known for the allegorical novella Animal Farm (1945) and the dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949). His non-fiction works, including The Road to Wigan Pier (1937), documenting his experience of working-class life in the north of England, and Homage to Catalonia (1938), an account of his experiences soldiering for the Republican faction of the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), are as critically respected as his essays on politics and literature, language and culture. In 2008, The Times ranked George Orwell second among "The 50 greatest British writers since 1945".

Orwell's work remains influential in popular culture and in political culture, and the adjective "Orwellian"—describing totalitarian and authoritarian social practices—is part of the English language, like many of his neologisms, such as "Big Brother", "Thought Police", "Two Minutes Hate", "Room 101", "memory hole", "Newspeak", "doublethink", "unperson", and "thoughtcrime", as well as providing direct inspiration for the neologism "groupthink".
