Summary

In "The Practical Magician and Ventriloquist's Guide," the Anonymous author presents a meticulous exploration of the art of magic and ventriloquism, combining practical instructions with historical insights. The book features a diverse array of tricks and techniques ranging from sleight of hand to puppet manipulation, each meticulously detailed and illustrated. Written in an engaging yet accessible literary style, it serves as both a resource for aspiring magicians and a nostalgic exploration of performance art during its golden age, highlighting the interplay between illusion and entertainment. The elusive nature of the author adds an intriguing layer to the text. Likely a performer themselves, the author draws from a rich tradition of magicians and ventriloquists, suggesting a deep understanding of the craft's nuances and history. This perspective is enriched by the book's contextual backdrop—an era when conjuring and puppetry captivated the public's imagination, reflecting societal desires for wonder and escapism. I highly recommend "The Practical Magician and Ventriloquist's Guide" to those interested in performance arts. Whether you are a budding magician, ventriloquist, or simply a lover of the theatrical, this guide serves as an invaluable resource that not only teaches techniques but also celebrates the enduring charm of magic.

Albert Henry Woolson (February 11, 1850 - August 2, 1956) was the last known surviving member of the Union Army who served in the American Civil War; he was also the last surviving Civil War veteran on either side whose status is undisputed. Woolson was born in Antwerp, New York, in Jefferson County. His father, Willard Woolson, who enlisted in the Union Army, was wounded at the Battle of Shiloh and later transported to an Army hospital in Windom, Minnesota, where he would die of his wounds. Albert and his mother moved to Windom to accompany his father. Soon after, Albert enlisted as a drummer boy in Company C, 1st Minnesota Heavy Artillery Regiment on October 10, 1864. However, the company never saw action, and Albert Woolson was discharged on September 7, 1865. Woolson returned to Minnesota, where he lived the rest of his life as a carpenter and, later, as a member of the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.), a powerful political organization made up of Civil War veterans where he became Senior Vice Commander-in-Chief in 1953. The following interview was recorded in 1954.

    Black Country Music - Listening...

Black Country Music tells the story of how Black musicians have changed the country music landscape and brought light to Black creativity and innovation.
After a century of racist whitewashing, country music is finally reckoning with its relationship to Black people. In this timely work—the first book on Black country music by a Black writer—Francesca Royster uncovers the Black performers and fans, including herself, who are exploring the pleasures and possibilities of the genre.

Informed by queer theory and Black feminist scholarship, Royster’s book elucidates the roots of the current moment found in records like Tina Turner’s first solo album, Tina Turns the Country On! She reckons with Black “bros” Charley Pride and Darius Rucker, then chases ghosts into the future with Valerie June. Indeed, it is the imagination of Royster and her artists that make this music so exciting for a genre that has long been obsessed with the past. The futures conjured by June and others can be melancholy, and are not free of racism, but by centering Black folk Royster begins to understand what her daughter hears in the banjo music of Our Native Daughters and the trap beat of Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road.” A Black person claiming country music may still feel a bit like a queer person coming out, but, collectively, Black artists and fans are changing what country music looks and sounds like—and who gets to love it.

This bundle offers a compelling and deeply insightful look into the complex and often harsh realities faced by both settlers and Indigenous peoples in Australia and New Zealand. This three-part volume captures the resilience, conflict, and cultural endurance that shaped these lands during their formative years of colonization and nation-building.
The first section, Surviving the Frontier: Australia’s Harsh Beginnings, explores the brutal and unforgiving conditions faced by early European settlers, convicts, and Indigenous Australians, shedding light on the challenges of survival, frontier violence, and the clash of civilizations.
The second section, New Zealand: A Nation’s Journey, traces New Zealand's path from a Māori homeland to a British colony and eventually an independent nation, while examining the cultural encounters, land disputes, and social changes that defined the nation's early years.
The third section, Aboriginal Australia: Land, People, and Culture, dives into the rich and enduring heritage of Australia's First Nations, exploring their profound connection to the land, complex social systems, and the ongoing struggle for cultural survival and recognition.
Together, these three perspectives provide a nuanced understanding of the human experience on the frontiers of Australia and New Zealand — highlighting both the resilience of Indigenous peoples and the challenges of colonial settlement. This book is essential for those seeking to understand the historical intersections of survival, resistance, and cultural identity in these two remarkable nations.

Before Bob and Barry, even before Bud, there was Bennie, and he might have been the best of them all. He was certainly the most innovative. Best remembered as the mentor of the University of Oklahoma's football team from 1905 through 1926, Bennie Owen also coached baseball and basketball and served as the director of athletics. He retired as intramural director at the age of seventy-five. A visionary and a builder, he exerted the driving force that created the university's Memorial Stadium, one field house, Memorial Union building, men's swimming pool, baseball field and bleachers, concrete tennis courts, nine-hole golf course and intramural playing fields. A true man of all seasons, he laid the foundation for a Sooner tradition of excellence--in football and beyond.
