Summary

In "Old Celtic Romances," the anonymous author delves into the rich tapestry of early Celtic literature, offering a collection of ancient tales that encapsulate the heroic spirit, magical realism, and cultural values of the Celtic world. Written in a lyrical and evocative style, the romances transport readers to a bygone era where brave warriors, enigmatic fairies, and tragic love stories intertwine. This volume is set within a broader context of medieval oral traditions, showcasing the preservation and transformation of narratives that were foundational to Celtic identity. Drawing from mythological sources such as the Mabinogion and the Táin Bó Cúailnge, the author captures the essence of the Celtic imagination. Influenced by the oral nature of these tales and the cultural shifts occurring in medieval Europe, the author weaves stories that resonate with themes of honor, fate, and the interplay between the human and the supernatural. Readers are encouraged to immerse themselves in the captivating worlds depicted in "Old Celtic Romances," as it offers profound insights into Celtic heritage and invites reflection on universal themes of love and valor. In Walking the Tideline, Caroline Kurtz solo hikes the rugged, beautiful Oregon Coast—an expedition of isolation, adventure, joy, and grief inside the emotional wilderness of finding one's identity after the death of a loved one.

In her third memoir, Portland-based author Caroline Kurtz travels the coast of Oregon on foot in her late sixties, tracing the boundary of sand and salt water, rock and forests, carrying her shelter and food as she navigates the edges of solace and resolution after the death of her husband. During her journey, Kurtz grieves as she reflects on her long, and at times rocky, marriage to Mark, whom she had known and loved since she was a teenager in boarding school in Ethiopia. As she navigates the adventures encountered along the trail—leaky tents, hitching rides, chance encounters, and beautiful landscapes—she intertwines the historical events of coastal Oregon with her spiritual experience, giving space for the shattering of an old identity and the planting of a new self, nourished and enlightened by the depths of a profoundly complex and considered life.

Kurtz spent her early years in Oregon before her parents moved her and her siblings to remote Ethiopia, where she spent her childhood and teen years, before returning to America for college, where she reunited with and married Mark. The two lived variously in Portland, Ethiopia, and Kenya, and retired to Portland, where Caroline now lives.

Barry Broman joined the CIA in 1971 straight out of the Marine Corps, choosing a career in intelligence largely because he wanted to spend his working life in Southeast Asia. Over the next thirty years, he had the privilege of working with brave men and women who were prepared to put their lives on the line in support of the free world during the Cold War, and he enjoyed the life of adventure he had been seeking since childhood.

This book brings together tales from his career as a CIA case officer during the Cold War, giving fascinating insights into handling double agents, working in denied areas, assessing and recruiting Soviet targets, flying with Air America, acting to discredit Soviet agents with Moscow, and what happened when a case officer sets a "scavenger hunt" around Bangkok for fellow spies—and at least one active target.

"Let me say at the outset that this book is not about Bear (he would be spoken of in the singular and masculine, capitalized and without an article), or it is only incidentally about him. I am less interested in defining the being of Bear than in trying to understand something about the spirit of wilderness, of which Bear is a very particular expression . . . Bear is a template of the wilderness."—from the Introduction

Since receiving the Pulitzer Prize in 1969 for his novel House Made of Dawn, N. Scott Momaday has had one of the most remarkable careers in twentieth-century American letters. Here, in In the Bear's House, Momaday passionately explores themes of loneliness, sacredness, and aggression through his depiction of Bear, the one animal that has both inspired and haunted him throughout his lifetime.

With transcendent dignity and gentleness, In the Bear's House celebrates Momaday's extraordinary creative vision and his evolution as one of our most gifted artists.
