Summary

In "Nan Sherwood on the Mexican Border," Annie Roe Carr weaves an enthralling narrative that follows the adventurous spirit of Nan Sherwood as she navigates the complexities of life along the U.S.-Mexico border. The book showcases Carr's penchant for vivid storytelling and engaging dialogue, placing it within the framework of early 20th-century American literature, where themes of exploration and cultural encounters come to the forefront. Carr's adept use of regional setting and rich character development provides readers with not just a tale of adventure, but a nuanced examination of societal issues and cultural dynamics facing both nations during that era. Annie Roe Carr, a prolific author and advocate for women's rights, often drew inspiration from her own experiences as a teacher and traveler. This background heavily influenced her writing, as she sought to portray strong, independent female characters who challenged conventional roles. Carr's familiarity with socio-political challenges of her time imbued her work with authenticity and relevance, making her one of the key voices in children's and young adult literature of the period. "Nan Sherwood on the Mexican Border" is an insightful read for those interested in historical adventures, youth empowerment, and the intricacies of border life. It invites readers of all ages to explore the richness of cultural encounters while reflecting on the obligations of friendship and understanding amidst differing backgrounds.

Yes, her house did look like a shoe and she did have a LOT of children (actually they were all her grandchildren so don't judge her) and she often did not know what to do. But she was a prudent and loving lady who took all 16 of them in and they somehow managed to not just grow, but thrive and grow healthier on the little food she could afford. That and of course the spanking they all got to help them grow. Perhaps it was the love that she gave them all with great abundance. She may be short on food and their beds may be cramped and their clothes patched and old, but there was never a lack of love for any of them in her 'shoe' home.
This story finally gives us the 'true' facts of how this all came about, both how she had so many children to care for and how her house gradually came to resemble a gigantic shoe. You know you want to know how this happened, don't you? I certainly did and am much happier now that it is all explained fully and neatly. Give it a listen!
