  Cliché-Verre - Miniatures On Glass

  Cliché-verre is a technique of etching and painting directly on photographic negatives. The term means “glass negative” in French and is as old as photography itself, dating to the 1840s and earlier. The first successful photographic process involved coating glass plates with light-sensitive chemicals from which reversed (positive) prints could be made. Artists experimented with drawing, etching, and combining images directly on the glass, resulting in fanciful black-and-white prints. But few artists were inspired to develop the idea further until the advent of color photography in the early 20th Century. 
  The Magic Lantern, long predating photography, was invented by Christiaan Huygens, a Dutch astronomer and physicist, in the 1600s. It is a simple device for projecting images, based upon the centuries-old principles of the “camera obscura” or “darkened room.” When the photographic process evolved to  
  film rather than glass plates, the technology spread. Color film arrived in the 1930s. There were now both film negatives and positives (slides). 
  Brian Allan Skinner is the author of six volumes of illustrated fiction. His experiments with cliché-verre began in the 1960s. Here are 50 examples of his work from the past half-century, in brilliant color. In the epilogue, he explains his process in detail.

  This is the story of Ben the useless Border Collie! Well that's what his first owner Gwyn Thomas thought. The sheep farmer had suffered a mental breakdown at the time. He had lost his wife in a terrible accident, causing him to almost lose his mind! His daughter Belle had also been involved in the tragedy, having her arm so badly injured it had had to be removed. Ben had been her pet, but he was also supposed to be a sheep dog, helping his mum Floss to take care of the large flock. Unfortunately, Ben had been born with a weak back leg, making it almost impossible for him to control the sheep. He was ok on a straight run, but when it came to turning round his leg let him down, causing the poor dog to fall over. It always upset him, but there was nothing he could do to alter the situation try as he might. This heartwarming tale is full of danger and love, it tells of many hair-raising happenings.

  The Rosetta Stone - Key to...

  The discovery of the Rosetta Stone in 1799 was a momentous event in the history of archaeology and linguistics. The stone, a large slab of granodiorite, was found by a French soldier named Pierre-François Bouchard during Napoleon Bonaparte’s military campaign in Egypt. While working near the town of Rashid (or Rosetta), Bouchard uncovered the stone, which contained an inscription in three different scripts: Ancient Greek, Egyptian hieroglyphs, and Demotic. At the time, Egypt was under French control, and the discovery was initially made by a team of French engineers working on fortifications. 
  The significance of the stone would not be immediately apparent, as the study of hieroglyphs had long been a mystery to scholars. Despite attempts by earlier scholars, no one had yet succeeded in translating the ancient Egyptian script, leaving a vast portion of Egypt’s history locked away. The discovery of the Rosetta Stone, however, offered a potential breakthrough due to its trilingual inscription, which allowed for comparison between the known Greek text and the two unknown Egyptian scripts. 
  The stone’s inscription itself was a royal decree issued in 196 BCE by the Egyptian priests in honor of King Ptolemy V Epiphanes. It celebrated his reign and the various accomplishments he had achieved, including his efforts to maintain peace and the prosperity of Egypt. The decree was written in three scripts to ensure it would be understood by various segments of society—the Greek script for the Greek-speaking rulers and officials, the Demotic script for the common Egyptian people, and the hieroglyphic script for the priests and religious authorities.
