Summary

"A well-crafted novel that will appeal to readers of mysteries, historical fiction, and genre westerns."—BooklistThe railroad is coming to Leadville and its rich Rocky Mountain mines. Among those who will be on hand to celebrate the arrival of the Denver & Rio Grande is Ulysses S. Grant, 18th President of the United States and former commander of the Union armies.Like other residents in the Colorado boomtown this summer of 1880, Inez Stannert regards the news as mixed. With her business partnership in the Silver Queen Saloon shaky and the bonds of family slipping (her husband is still missing and her young son is still back East), Inez doesn't need the lawlessness of Leadville to turn, once again, into murder. But Inez isn't the only one with iron ties to the past. Some folks have wicked memories of the war, others have a stake in the competing railroad lines. And photographer Susan Carothers, Inez's friend, is caught in the deadly crossfire….Silver Rush Mysteries:Silver Lies (Book 1)Iron Ties (Book 2)Leaden Skies (Book 3)Mercury's Rise (Book 4)What Gold Buys (Book 5)A Dying Note (Book 6)Mortal Music (Book 7)Praise for the Silver Rush Mysteries:"Plenty of convincing action bodes well for a long and successful series."—Publishers Weekly STARRED review for Iron Ties"Meticulously researched and full of rich period details…her characters will stay will you long after you've finished the last page. "The Adventure of the Dancing Men", a Sherlock Holmes story written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, is one of 13 stories in the cycle published as The Return of Sherlock Holmes in 1905. Doyle ranked "The Adventure of the Dancing Men" third in his list of his twelve favorite Holmes stories. This is one of only two Sherlock Holmes short stories where Holmes' client dies after seeking his help. The other is "The Five Orange Pips", part of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. The original title was "The Dancing Men," when it was published as a short story in The Strand Magazine in December 1903.
The story begins when Hilton Cubitt of Ridling Thorpe Manor in Norfolk visits Sherlock Holmes and gives him a piece of paper with the following mysterious sequence of stick figures. - Cubitt explains to Holmes and Dr. Watson that he has recently married an American woman named Elsie Patrick. Before the wedding, she had asked her husband-to-be never to ask about her past, as she had had some "very disagreeable associations" in her life, although she said that there was nothing that she was personally ashamed of. Their marriage had been a happy one until the messages began to arrive, first mailed from the United States and then appearing in the garden.

Spring has sprung, and with it, a full line-up of programming at Larkspur Community Library. Director Greta Plank is preparing to host the Wisconsin Library Organization's annual conference—and dreading the arrival of her ex-boyfriend—while also helping a local treasure-hunting club coordinate a showcase highlighting Northern Wisconsin's gangster trail and the nearby hideouts of the notorious criminals of the early twentieth century.

When Greta overhears the library board president and a member of the treasure-hunting club arguing about a secret discovery, her curiosity is piqued—even more so when one of the women leaves a book with a sequence of strange markings on its pages in the library book return bin. Before Greta can ask about the marginalia, the book's outspoken owner turns up dead.

At the request of the police—though against the better judgment of her beau, Detective Mark McHenry—Greta sets to work trying to decipher the peculiar notations, and she quickly hypothesizes that there's more to the story. Greta must work against the clock to decode the dead woman's book code. What she finds is someone willing to go to great lengths to keep a secret buried in the stacks—and the past—even if it means killing again.

In Search of the Unknown by Robert W. Chambers is a whimsical, episodic tale blending adventure and natural history. The story follows two amateur zoologists, Douglas Quimby and “Bugs” Hartley, as they embark on a quest to capture rare and elusive creatures for a museum collection. Their misadventures lead them through swamps, forests, and caves, encountering bizarre animals and eccentric characters along the way. Chambers infuses humor and curiosity into their journey, celebrating the wonders of the natural world while critiquing humanity’s often destructive relationship with it. Though less cohesive than his earlier works, the novel captures a sense of wonder and discovery, reflecting Chambers’ fascination with the unknown. A charming blend of science and storytelling, In Search of the Unknown invites readers to marvel at life’s mysteries and the thrill of exploration.
