Summary

In "The Consolation of Philosophy," originally penned by Anicius Manlius Severinus Boethius in the early 6th century, the author merges philosophy with a poetic narrative style, reflecting the tensions of a world in crisis. Written while Boethius was imprisoned and awaiting execution, this text marvelously explores themes of fortune, happiness, and the transient nature of worldly power. Boethius employs a dialogue between himself and Lady Philosophy, who serves as his guide through an array of philosophical inquiries, ultimately asserting that true happiness lies in the pursuit of virtue rather than material wealth. Boethius, a Roman philosopher, statesman, and Christian thinker, drew upon a rich intellectual heritage, intertwining Platonic and Aristotelian elements with Christian ethos. His position in the tumultuous political landscape of the late Roman Empire, coupled with his personal misfortunes, deeply informed the poignant reflections found in this work. Boethius's unique ability to articulate his despair and his quest for understanding resonates profoundly in both philosophical and theological discourse. "The Consolation of Philosophy" is an essential read for anyone seeking insight into the human condition, offering timeless wisdom that remains relevant in contemporary discussions of ethics and happiness. Its fusion of prose and verse invites readers to ponder life's most pressing questions, making it a remarkable companion for both casual readers and serious scholars alike.

Some years ago, Oliver Darkshire stepped into the hushed interior of Henry Sotheran Ltd (est. 1761) to apply for a job. Allured by the smell of old books and the temptation of a management-approved afternoon nap, Darkshire was soon unteetering stacks of first editions and placating the store's resident ghost (the late Mr. Sotheran, hit by a tram).

A novice in this ancient, potentially haunted establishment, Darkshire describes Sotheran's brushes with history (Dickens, the Titanic), its joyous disorganization, and the unspoken rules of its gleefully old-fashioned staff, whose mere glance may cause the computer to burst into flames. As Darkshire gains confidence and experience, he shares trivia about ancient editions and explores the strange space that books occupy in our lives—where old books often have strong sentimental value, but rarely a commercial one.

By turns unhinged and earnest, Once Upon a Tome is the colorful story of life in one of the world's oldest bookshops and a love letter to the benign, unruly world of antiquarian bookselling, where to be uncommon or strange is the best possible compliment.

When fear takes hold, we can feel powerless and insipid. Life’s spiritual battles become too much, and the devil seems to be winning. It does not have to be like this, though! We can, and do, have victory in Christ. Faith in the all-powerful one means that we are strong in him, even when we feel weak. Jonathan Stephen writes with clarity and compassion to help us understand how the battle against the enemy can truly be won. He uses one of the best known and most dramatic incidents in the Gospels, the stilling of the storm. As he draws our attention to what Jesus is teaching through this ‘faith-training exercise’, we join the disciples in discovering that when we are buffeted and frightened by the storms of life we can not only endure but overcome.

Justinian I, known to history as Justinian the Great, ruled as the Byzantine emperor from 527 until his death in 565. His reign is marked by a series of ambitious efforts to revive the grandeur of the Roman Empire, although many of these goals were only partially realized. This vision, known as the renovatio imperii or "reinstatement of the Empire," encapsulated his drive to restore Roman territories lost to barbarian invasions and to reassert imperial authority across the Mediterranean world.
One of the most prominent aspects of Justinian's renovatio imperii was the partial reconquest of the western provinces of the fallen Roman Empire. His military campaigns, led by the brilliant general Belisarius, achieved remarkable successes. Belisarius swiftly captured the Vandal Kingdom in North Africa, establishing Byzantine control over the region. Shortly thereafter, he, along with other generals like Narses, waged a series of successful campaigns against the Ostrogoths in Italy, eventually reclaiming key territories such as Dalmatia, Sicily, Rome, and much of Italy. This marked the end of the Ostrogothic Kingdom, which had ruled for over fifty years. Additionally, under the leadership of the praetorian prefect Liberius, the Byzantines reasserted control over the Iberian Peninsula, establishing the province of Spania. These victories re-established Roman dominance in the western Mediterranean and brought in substantial annual revenues, estimated at over a million solidi.
