Summary

Second chances are only helpful if you recognize them for what they are.
Celebrated actress Scarlett Thomas never wanted fame -- that was her parent's dream.  Now she's ready to make big changes, but she could never have imagined how big those changes might turn out to be.  Returning to the medieval Dunskirk Castle, where she filmed The Puppet War trilogy, she encounters an old Scotsman named Donell who directs her to an ancient claymore that sends Scarlett slipping back 500 years to a time when her modern struggles are dwarfed by a far more dangerous conflict brewing between Scotland and England.
Scottish Border lord, James Hepburn, Laird of Achenmeade, is a man at loose ends.  The illegitimate son of the auld King's illegitimate daughter, he has no place in his father's home and no freedom to forge a future of his own.  When war with England is again looming on Scotland's horizon, James must not only fight for his country but do so while trying to battle his growing attraction for a slender, sassy lass who tempts him to defy his sire and his King.
As the days pass, bringing them closer to war and to each other, Scarlett and James discover that their differences are not so profound as their similarities and that the 16th century and the 21st century do not diverge so much in what truly matters most.  They try to fight against their growing attraction, but when they are confronted with the opportunity to live their lives freely, as they choose, will they seize their second chance before the Battle of Flodden separates them forever?
Before it's too late, will Scarlett realize how lucky she was to be taken by a Laird?

A devilish rake will do anything to learn the secret of a straitlaced schoolmarm in this Regency romance by the bestselling author of The Troublemaker. Word has it that every awkward young lady sent to Mrs. Hester Poitevant’s Mayfair Academy inevitably becomes marriage material. With her students going on to have any eligible bachelor they wish, Hester is able to live comfortably and in the background. And no one knows that under the guise of a stuffy widow, she is a beautiful woman who has never been married. Although Adrian Hawke is a dashing and successful businessman, his scandalous birth makes him a less-than-ideal candidate for a husband. When he draws attention from one of Hester’s favorite students, the prim Mrs. Poitevant forcefully puts a stop to it—and falls victim to his charms herself. Adrian, meanwhile, is not fooled by the feisty widow’s facade. Intrigued, the clever rogue is determined to uncover what Hester is hiding in more ways . . . than one. Perfect for fans of the Bridgerton series! “With this sparkling romance between a highly regarded widow and a thoroughly charming rake, Becnel . . . breathes life into the rigid Regency-era romance genre. . . . Hester’s spirited personality and Adrian's devil-may-care attitude will appeal to a broad readership. Playful in tone and rich in character, this book is fun, breezy entertainment.” —Publishers Weekly “A real treat.” —Booklist

The problem this time is in Siam and its adjoining country Khmer and he agrees to try to find out if it is true as the Siamese think that the French have their eyes on Khmer.
Lord Templeton agrees to go, but Sir James tells him that there is a further problem in that both the King of Siam and the King of Khmer are anxious to marry an English woman so that they have a greater call on the British and can proudly fly the Union Jack.
Sir James suggests to Lord Templeton that he would be absolutely safe if he takes his lovely niece, Amina, with him pretending to be his wife. Lord Templeton is not very keen on this as he is pressure from his family to preserve his title and estate and anyway he has sworn never to marry until he is much older.
However Sir James presses him to take his niece for the simple reason that she has been brought up by her father as a boy and hates the idea of marrying anyone.
Amina is dressed in beautiful clothes for the journey and reluctantly begins to feel a little more feminine.
Finally they set off and are treated warmly in Siam but there is danger and death waiting for them in Khmer.
