Sinopse

All author royalties and publisher profits from the sale of this book will go to The Live Aid Trust

On Saturday, 13 July 1985, a blazing, cloudless summer day, millions of people settled in front of the television. It was just before noon in London, 7 am in Philadelphia, and around the world, it was time for Live Aid. This pair of huge concerts had been arranged in fewer than four months by singer and activist Bob Geldof of The Boomtown Rats: from a standing start to sixteen hours of music, seventy-plus artists and close to two hundred songs. These concerts mesmerised a huge global audience and raised millions for the starving in Ethiopia. This book revisits every band and every song that made up the two Live Aid concerts. Some made their name at Live Aid — U2 in particular. Some bands reunited — Status Quo, The Who, Black Sabbath — and some were performing their last show together. Certain performances last long in the memory — Queen, of course, but also David Bowie, Elton John, Santana and others. Indeed, some are best forgotten …And, behind it all, the drive of Bob Geldof: ‘the best day of my life,’ he admitted. For a generation of music fans, 13 July 1985 was a landmark day. It was The Greatest Show On Earth. How much of it do you remember?

Andrew Wild is an experienced writer, music collector and film buff with many books to his name, including recent publications about Queen, The Allman Brothers Band, Pink Floyd, Dire Straits and Crosby, Stills and Nash. What's sexy about saving the planet? Funny you should ask. Because that is precisely—or, perhaps, broadly—what Annie Sprinkle and Beth Stephens have spent many years bringing to light in their live art, exhibitions, and films. In 2008, Sprinkle and Stephens married the Earth, which set them on the path to explore the realms of ecosexuality as they became lovers with the Earth and made their mutual pleasure an embodied expression of passion for the environment. Ever since, they have been not just pushing but obliterating the boundaries circumscribing biology and ecology, creating ecosexual art in their performance of an environmentalism that is feminist, queer, sensual, sexual, posthuman, materialist, exuberant, and steeped in humor.

Assuming the Ecosexual Position tells of childhood moments that pointed to a future of ecosexuality—for Annie, in her family swimming pool in Los Angeles; for Beth, savoring forbidden tomatoes from the vine on her grandparents' Appalachian farm. The book describes how the two came together as lovers and collaborators, how they took a stand against homophobia and xenophobia, and how this union led to the miraculous conception of the Love Art Laboratory, which involved influential performance artists Linda M. Montano, Guillermo Gómez-Peña, and feminist pornographer Madison Young.

    THE ULTIMATE TRIVIA COLLECTION

    ABOUT THE FILM
Platoon (1986), directed by Oliver Stone, is a gritty Vietnam War film that follows Chris Taylor, a young and idealistic U.S. Army recruit, who is thrust into the harsh realities of combat. Assigned to a platoon in South Vietnam, Taylor faces moral and physical challenges as he navigates the brutal conflict. The film explores the psychological toll of war through the contrasting leadership styles of two sergeants: the callous Sergeant Barnes and the compassionate Sergeant Elias. The film delves into themes of loyalty, survival, and the moral ambiguity of war, offering a raw and realistic portrayal of the Vietnam War experience.

    TRIVIA SAMPLES:

“According to Oliver Stone, he intentionally cast Tom Berenger and Willem Dafoe against type. Berenger, who played the ruthless Sergeant Barnes, was mainly known for playing good guys, while Dafoe, who had often played villains, took on the heroic role of Sergeant Elias. The casting was a success, earning both actors Oscar nominations.”

“Charlie Sheen credited Keith David with saving his life. During filming in an open-door Huey gunship, the helicopter banked too sharply, throwing Sheen toward the open door. David grabbed him and pulled him back inside just in time.”

“Lieutenant Wolfe’s character is frequently used in U.S. military leadership courses as an example of how not to behave as a junior officer.”

This implied that he was poorer than a church mouse, who ate holes out of Swiss cheese.Love still blossomed and the two love birds got married. they had 5 sons and 2 daughters, among them was one boy named Nyathirach. the book then involves an inspirational story while threatening to become a cautionary tale at every turn.

This program is read by the author.A darkly comic memoir about being a working creative person in a world that is growing ever more dysfunctional, by acclaimed New Yorker cartoonist and television writer Bruce Eric Kaplan In January 2022, Bruce Eric Kaplan found himself confused and upset by the state of the world and the state of his life as a television writer in Los Angeles. He started a journal to keep from going mad, which eventually became They Went Another Way.The book’s through line traces his attempt to get a television project set up in the increasingly Byzantine world of Hollywood. But as he details the project’s ups and downs, Kaplan finds himself ruminating not only on show business but also on today’s political and social issues, on old movies and TV shows and music, on his family, on his friends, on his past, on his failing heating system, and on all the dead birds thatkeep showing up in his backyard. This hilarious and surprisingly moving book is about life—about art, about love, about alienation, about connection, about ugliness and beauty, about disappointment, wonder, and hope. In short, it is about everything.A Macmillan Audio production from Henry Holt & Company.

The Sengoku period, meaning “Warring States,” was one of the most turbulent and transformative eras in Japanese history. Lasting from the mid-15th century to the early 17th century, it was marked by ceaseless conflict, shifting alliances, and the gradual disintegration of centralized authority. The roots of this period can be traced back to the decline of the Ashikaga Shogunate, the Ōnin War, and the rise of regional warlords known as daimyo, each vying for control over Japan’s fractured political landscape.
The Ashikaga Shogunate, which had ruled Japan since the early 14th century, gradually lost its grip on the country due to internal corruption, weak leadership, and an inability to maintain order. By the mid-15th century, the shogunate had become largely symbolic, with real power resting in the hands of feudal lords. These tensions erupted into full-scale conflict with the outbreak of the Ōnin War (1467–1477), a devastating civil war primarily fought in and around Kyoto. What began as a succession dispute within the shogunate spiraled into a nationwide conflict, leading to the destruction of Kyoto and the collapse of central authority.
With the Ashikaga Shogunate rendered powerless, Japan entered a chaotic era where military might determined control. Local daimyo, originally appointed as provincial governors, seized the opportunity to establish autonomous domains. These warlords fortified their territories, raised armies, and engaged in relentless battles to expand their influence. The traditional system of hereditary rule began to erode as capable military leaders, often of humble origins, overthrew established families. This period saw the rise of powerful daimyo such as the Takeda, Uesugi, and Hojo clans, each striving to dominate the fractured nation.
