This is an audiobook of Bodhi Leaves No.53 by M. O’C. Walshe, 'Why Buddhism?, Why Theravada?, Theravada, Mahayana, Hinayana: Three Essays' found in the Pariyatti Edition of Collected Bodhi Leaves Vol. II. Excerpt from Theravada, Mahayana, Hinayana by Maurice Walshe 'Let us return to “Basic Buddhism.” The third section of the Path consists of three steps: right effort, right mindfulness and right concentration. That some effort is needed is surely obvious, though some “Zenful” characters in the West have been heard to deny it. They should try just one week in a Zen monastery! Right mindfulness has been declared by the Buddha to be the “one and only way” to liberation. It is the way of vipassanā—insight-wisdom. And how else could wisdom be gained but by “mindfulness and clear awareness”? Right concentration includes various things, among them the four Brahmavihāras: the development of loving kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy and equanimity. So by practising these two steps of the Path we can develop the “twin pillars” of the Mahayana: wisdom and compassion. Perhaps it scarcely matters whether we set out to become an Arahant or a Bodhisattva. But suppose a Bodhisattva, by practising too much mindfulness, became an Arahant by mistake… That would be terrible. Or would it?'Show book

The timeless Newbery Honor Book from bestselling author Katherine Paterson about a wisecracking, ornery, completely unforgettable young heroine. Eleven-year-old Gilly has been stuck in more foster families than she can remember, and she's hated them all. She has a reputation for being brash, brilliant, and completely unmanageable, and that's the way she likes it. So when she's sent to live with the Trotters—by far the strangest family yet—she knows it's only a temporary problem. Gilly decides to put her sharp mind to work and get out of there fast. She's determined to no longer be a foster kid. Before long she's devised an elaborate scheme to get her real mother to come rescue her. Unfortunately, the plan doesn't work out quite as she hoped it would... This classic middle grade novel has moved generations of readers and inspired a major motion picture starring Octavia Spencer, Kathy Bates, Glenn Close, and Danny Glover. The acclaim for the book included the National Book Award, the Christopher Award, and the Jane Addams Award. The joys and struggles of adoption, told in a real and accessible way, are beautifully expressed in Katherine Paterson's The Great Gilly Hopkins. Don't miss it!Show book
A.A. Milne, the beloved author of the Winnie-the-Pooh series, followed up his success with the first two Pooh books - "When We Were Very Young" and "Winnie-the-Pooh" - with this collection of poems for young readers that has become a classic in children's literature. The book features Christopher Robin and Pooh Bear (of course) but also a wide range of characters throughout the thirty-plus poems collected in this volume. "Now We Are Six" includes poems like "King John's Christmas" where the "bad" King John wishes for a rubber ball in his holiday stocking, "In the Dark," where Christopher Robin - tucked into bed- dreams of late-night adventures as he falls asleep and "Binker," wherein a lonely young boy celebrates his imaginary friend. A poetry collection for young readers that is without peer, "Now We Are Six" is presented here in its original and unabridged format.Show book
