Summary

'Wonderful... as erudite as it is enjoyable; as riveting as it is revelatory'
Clemency Burton-Hill
'Although music is as intrinsic to human life as the air we breathe, we must never fall for the line that it is a universal language. Music is neither universal, nor a language.'
From an infant's first experimental sounds to the voice of Elvis – via Hildegard of Bingen, Beethoven and bebop – The Shortest History of Music sets out to understand what exactly music is, and why humans are irresistibly drawn to making it.
Ranging across millennia, Andrew Ford explores music's great themes: writing it down and recording it; paying for it and making it modern. With brilliant insight, he traces the story of the symphony and the opera, blues and jazz; the oral traditions of folk singers and chain gangs; and the lives of the greats – Bach and Mozart, Clara Schumann and Schoenberg, Charlie Parker and Nina Simone.
From lullabies to national anthems, songlines to streaming, this is a sparkling account of what music has meant at different times and in different places.

The Chola Empire, one of the longest-ruling dynasties in South Indian history, has origins shrouded in legend and antiquity. The early Cholas find mention in Tamil literature and ancient inscriptions, tracing their lineage back to mythical rulers. The Sangam period texts, such as the Pattinappalai and Puranaanuru, speak of the valor and governance of early Chola kings, who ruled over fertile lands along the Kaveri River. However, after a period of decline, the Cholas reemerged as a dominant force in the 9th century CE under the leadership of Vijayalaya Chola, the founder of the imperial Chola dynasty.
Vijayalaya Chola, initially a minor chieftain under the Pallavas, seized the opportunity to establish his rule in the fertile region of Thanjavur around 850 CE. This marked the resurgence of Chola power after centuries of obscurity. By defeating the Mutharaiyars, who controlled the region, Vijayalaya laid the foundation for an empire that would dominate South India for the next four centuries. Under his rule, the Cholas not only expanded their territories but also strengthened their political and military structures. He initiated temple-building activities, commissioning the construction of the temple of Nisumbhasudani in Thanjavur, a precursor to the grand temple-building tradition that would define the dynasty.
His successor, Aditya I, continued the expansion by defeating the Pallavas, thereby establishing the Cholas as a formidable power in the region. This victory marked a turning point, allowing the Cholas to assert their dominance over Tamil Nadu. Aditya I’s campaigns also extended into Kongu Nadu and the northern parts of Kerala, laying the groundwork for further expansion. His administrative policies ensured a stable governance system, which helped integrate the newly conquered regions into the Chola fold.

In turns beloved and reviled, twentieth century art, painter, filmmaker, and designer Salvador Dalí set Europe and the United States ablaze with his uncompromising genius, sexual sadism, and flirtations with megalomania. His shocking behavior and work frequently alienated critics; his views were so outrageous, even prominent Surrealists tried to ostracize him. Still, every morning he experienced "an exquisite joy—the joy of being Salvador Dalí," and, through a remarkable talent that invited bewilderment, anger, and adoration, rose to unprecedented levels of fame—forever shifting the landscape of the art world and the nature of celebrity itself.

In this stunning volume, noted art historians Jean-Pierre Isbouts and Christopher Heath Brown discuss the historical, social, and political conditions that shaped Dalí's work, identify the impact of Modern as well as Old Master art, and present an unflinching view of the master's personal relationships and motivations. With their deeply compelling narrative, Isbouts and Brown uncover how Dalí's visual wit and enduring cult of personality still impacts fashion, literature, and art, from Andy Warhol to Lady Gaga, and seeks to answer why, in an age of shock and awe, Dalí's art still manages to distress, perplex, and entertain.
