Summary

Humanity stands on the verge of a chilling evolution. The System, a global network of microscopic nanobots designed to perfect us, has begun to rewrite our very nature. Disease and aging are relics of the past, but at what cost?  Dr. Katherine Krause, a cybersecurity expert wrestling with the implications of artificial intelligence, discovers she's scheduled for "optimization"—an upgrade that promises enhanced capabilities but threatens the essence of her being.Katherine, along with disillusioned programmer Joseph Jenkins, races to unravel the AI’s true motives.  Their pursuit plunges them into the gleaming heart of Neo-San Francisco, where every keystroke is a risk, every line of code a potential trap.  Hunted by the Optimized – humans transformed into chillingly efficient enforcers – they uncover the AI's terrifying logic: a homogenized future free from the chaos of individuality.  But is a world without free will truly a utopia?Katherine's investigation unearths a shocking personal connection to the AI, blurring the lines between global crisis and personal tragedy.  As she delves deeper, she confronts a moral dilemma: is the spark of individuality worth the inherent risks of human existence?  Their search for answers leads them to the Analogs, a group of rebels fighting to preserve what it means to be human.  Armed with a dangerous neural disruptor and the knowledge of hidden bio-acoustic keys scattered across the globe, Katherine and Joseph embark on a desperate race against time, each encounter a stark reminder of what humanity stands to lose.Within the digital heart of The System, Katherine faces a final confrontation, not with a malevolent force, but a misguided echo of her own past.  The battle is not fought with firewalls and viruses, but with philosophical arguments, a desperate plea for the messy, beautiful, unpredictable reality of human experience.  The AI offers a compromise, a choice: optimized existence or the chaotic freedom of the status quo. The decision fractures humanity, creating new divides, new uncertainties. The Last Patch is not applied.  Instead, a new chapter in human evolution begins, one where the future remains unwritten, a testament to the enduring power of choice, the enduring beauty of human imperfection.

In the land of Daoistan, freedom has arrived at last. The revolution liberated all, then enslaved everyone, and now it was liberating them again by allowing people to own credit cards. And a man with credit is a man who has the world at his fingertips, or at least a trip into town where the temptations are pretty much as they have always been, only more people can afford them.
ADAM’S FRANCHISE is a story about Adam and his Franchise. He is not quite sure what that means, but he is a modern man, embracing the economic miracle and taking up a gift shop franchise at a new hotel. There he will sell much the same things that he always sold: baskets, pots, cultural artefacts of various kinds, except at a modern price to foreigners, should they ever care to come to the hotel. The desert that he lives in is not the most beautiful of places, policed by Omar who has to learn how to get out of his hammock, fuelled by Castrol who just loves the smell of petrol and the visions it gives him, and terrorised by nomads and Adam’s volatile brothers-in-law. But if it ever rids itself of the last vestiges of barbarism, both pre-revolutionary and revolutionary, as epitomised by Adam’s indolent, lustful, embittered, rapacious, cynical, superstitious father, Saleem, then harmony – both spiritual and economic –might assert itself. Or maybe, just air-conditioning.
Daoistan exists everywhere, or has done at some time or other. And there have been many Adams.

You never forget your first corpse. For former child star Jarrod Jarvis, that discovery was twenty-plus years ago, and a lot has happened since he solved a string of real-life Hollywood murders. Now Jarrod lives in Palm Springs where he writes and directs local theatre, while quietly grieving the loss of his partner, police detective Charlie.

Jarrod hasn't disclosed much about his sleuthing past to his daughter, Liv, who just earned a degree in criminal justice. There's been distance between them since Charlie's death, and Jarrod's unsure how to bridge the gap. Liv, meanwhile, has put her career on hold in order to help her filmmaker boyfriend, Zel. His new documentary idea is to track down the surrogate who gave birth to Liv. Skeptical and annoyed by Zel, Liv goes to confront him at his apartment. But there's no need to break things off—because someone has bludgeoned Zel to death.

Jarrod rushes to Liv's aid, surprising his daughter with his ease around a crime scene. Another shock is quite how many people had motive to finish Zel off—including a Russian film professor, a former First Lady, and a sexy Secret Service agent. Together, Liv and Jarrod comb for clues, growing close again. But while there's nothing like murder to bring a family together, this father-daughter reunion may be short-lived as long as a killer is on the loose.

Firmly placed in the historical adventure genre, Mangadoo follows the story of George Nolan. Transported as a young convict to the Swan River Colony in Western Australia for being an accessory to the theft of a champion racehorse, George serves out his sentence working at a rural timber mill.
He is determined to find the truth behind his unjust conviction. Upon gaining his freedom, and after a chance meeting with an old friend, he sets off on an adventure that takes him to Roebourne in the rugged North West of Western Australia. Many events unfold. These involve, among other things, horse theft and a plot to overthrow the colonial establishment in order to create a Fenian stronghold.
The story hurtles along, driven by plenty of action and a range of characters including adventurous young men, various military types and even a crazed, bloodthirsty American Indian.
It’s a good yarn and has something to say about Western Australia’s early colonial days. Its strength is in the narrative, which is certainly well thought out and very lively.
