Sinopse

"Willis Tower" explores the comprehensive history of one of the world's most iconic skyscrapers, from its ambitious conception as the Sears Tower to its current status as a global landmark. The book examines the building's revolutionary engineering, particularly Fazlur Khan's bundled tube system, which allowed for unprecedented height. It delves into the tower's role as a cultural symbol deeply intertwined with Chicago's identity and the economic aspirations of Sears, Roebuck and Co. during a period of significant urban development.

The book unfolds chronologically, starting with the historical context of the tower's inception and Sears's motivations for consolidation. It examines the tower's planning and construction in the early 1970s and its impact on Chicago's skyline. The narrative progresses through the building's reign as the world's tallest and its eventual rebranding as the Willis Tower.

This study of architectural boldness relies on archival documents, architectural plans, and firsthand accounts, offering unique perspectives on the tower's design and construction. Unique in its holistic approach, the book considers not only the architectural marvels but also the social, economic, and cultural contexts surrounding the Willis Tower. It connects to broader themes in urban studies, economic history, and cultural geography, showcasing how the tower reshaped Chicago's downtown core and continues to represent architectural innovation and urban resilience.

"...an excellent primer about the operations in and around the Anzio beachhead. Students of operational art, multinational operations, and amphibious warfare will find Staiger’s narrative interesting and thought-provoking." — Military Review

The Allied amphibious operation codenamed Shingle was launched in late January 1944. It was opposed by German forces in the area of Anzio and Nettuno. Success depended on the element of surprise, and the speed with which the invaders could build up strength and move inland. This was understood by General Mark Clark, commander of the US Fifth Army, but not fully understood by his subordinate commanders.

This German account focuses on the landing at Anzio as it was the only one that failed to achieve its objective of smashing the German defense and achieving operational freedom of movement. The battle lasted over six weeks, with mistakes made by leadership on both sides, and consequently also great sacrifice by soldiers on both sides. But the operation was not a German success either, and attempts to prevent the creation of a strong bridgehead failed. Ultimately the Allies would reach Rome, and the Allies applied lessons from this battle to facilitate the success of Overlord, launched five months later.

While not complete, as the author did not have access to some of the war diaries of higher levels of German command, this is still one of the best German accounts of Operation Shingle and is here translated into English for the first time.

Carl von Clausewitz, a Prussian general and military theorist, remains one of the most influential figures in the study of warfare. Born in 1780 in Prussia, Clausewitz entered the military at a young age, where he quickly distinguished himself as a talented strategist and thinker. His career spanned the Napoleonic Wars, where he gained practical experience in the field, as well as in the more reflective study of military theory. His best-known work, On War (Vom Kriege), has been regarded as a cornerstone of modern military thought, delving deeply into the nature of war, its relationship with politics, and the importance of understanding its unpredictable and often chaotic character.
Clausewitz’s career was marked by his involvement in some of the most significant military campaigns of his time, including those against Napoleon Bonaparte. His firsthand experiences with the brutality and unpredictability of warfare informed much of his thinking, and it is within this context that he formulated his theories about war. One of his most famous assertions, "War is merely the continuation of politics by other means," encapsulates his belief that military conflict is inherently connected to political objectives, and that military strategy cannot be understood in isolation from the larger goals of a nation.
