Sinopse

Treasures Recovered explores the fascinating world of archaeological discovery and historical reinterpretation, revealing how unearthed artifacts reshape our understanding of world history. The book demonstrates how these recovered treasures, like the Antikythera Mechanism, challenge conventional narratives and offer new insights into ancient civilizations. One intriguing aspect discussed is the ethical considerations surrounding artifact repatriation and the complex interplay between cultural heritage and national identity. The book uniquely synthesizes interdisciplinary research, combining historical narratives with scientific analysis. By examining case studies such as the Terracotta Army and the city of Pompeii, Treasures Recovered illustrates how these finds provide a tangible connection to the past. These artifacts are not just relics; they offer a window into the daily lives, technological advancements, and societal structures of bygone eras. The book progresses by first introducing core concepts, then delving into specific examples, and finally discussing the implications of these discoveries for contemporary society.

A time capsule from the early 1990s, this book is one-half academic analysis and one-half practical experience. It offers a learning reference for students of indigenous relations, as well as politics and administration, and serves a unique insight into a policy area that has again in recent years assumed center-stage in Canada.
This publication takes two earlier works from 1992 and 1993 respectively: an academic thesis on what was at the time called Indian policy and Canada's Indian Act, and a major research study for the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples. Both have been reworked into this new book.
Chapter 1: Perspectives from Academia is a reproduction of a Master’s thesis in 1992. When originally prepared, this study represented one of few such studies in Canada that considered the politics and administration issues of Aboriginal governance in Canada.
Chapter II: Perspectives from Practice is a reproduction of a final report produced collaboratively with the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples. This report explained how the Indian Act both protected, yet stymied, anyone with entrepreneurial drive if that person, or groups of people, were located on-reserve.
Both parts of this book were prepared during a brief “moment” 30 years ago when indigenous issues became a national priority. The controversies around the Meech Lake Accord, the military-Mohawk confrontation at Oka, and the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples highlighted the desperation all too characteristic of Canada’s indigenous reality. Then, as today, Canada’s Indian Act and its legacy, lie at the heart of it all – a reality that indigenous and non-indigenous Canadians alike struggle to reconcile.

The astonishing true story of a boy who survived the war by hiding in the Polish forest
Maxwell Smart was eleven years old when his entire family was killed before his eyes. He might have died along with them, but his mother selflessly ordered him to save himself. Alone in the forest, he dug a hole in the ground for shelter and foraged for food in farmers’ fields. His clothes in rags and close to starvation, he repeatedly escaped death at the hands of Nazis and Ukrainian thugs.
After months alone, Maxwell encountered a boy wandering in the forest looking for food. Janek was also alone; like Maxwell he had just become an orphan, and the two quickly became friends. They built a bunker in the ground to survive through the winter. One day, after a massacre took place nearby, the boys discovered a baby girl, still alive, lying in the arms of her dead mother. Maxwell and Janek rescued the baby, but this act came at a great cost.
Max’s epic tale of heroism will inspire with its proof of the enduring human spirit. From the brutality of war emerges a man who would become a celebrated artist, offering the world, in contrast to the horrors of his suffering, beautiful works of art. The Boy in the Woods is a remarkable historical document about a time that should never be forgotten.
