Summary

"Thrones Abandoned" explores the intriguing phenomenon of royal abdication, examining why rulers voluntarily relinquish power. It challenges the notion that power is universally craved by analyzing the personal, political, and societal factors compelling monarchs to abdicate. The book delves into the motivations behind these decisions, such as personal crises or political pressures, and investigates the lasting effects on both the rulers and their former realms.

The book looks at how abdication highlights the intricate relationship between personal desires, political realities, and societal expectations. It emphasizes that these decisions are rarely, if ever, purely personal. For instance, a ruler might abdicate due to shifting social norms that challenge the legitimacy of the monarchy, or because of political instability threatening their reign. Through case studies and historical analysis, "Thrones Abandoned" provides a framework for understanding this complex historical phenomenon.

The book progresses thematically, beginning with the definition and historical prevalence of abdication. Subsequent chapters explore the motivations, analyze case studies, and examine the consequences. By emphasizing the agency of rulers in choosing to relinquish power, the book offers a unique perspective often overlooked in traditional narratives.

Pure obsessional obsessive-compulsive disorder, or "Pure O" OCD, is a subtype of OCD that is characterized by intrusive thoughts, images, or urges without any visible symptoms. These "hidden compulsions" can include constant reassurance seeking, obsessive regret or worry, and may involve avoidance, excessive preparation, and thought rituals. They can also cloud your judgement, causing you to make decisions based on fears and compulsions instead of your values. So, how do you break this obsessive cycle?

Grounded in acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and written by a renowned ACT and anxiety expert, "Pure O" OCD explains the cognitive fusion underlying your obsessive thoughts, and how it can lead to social anxiety, not feeling good enough, panics and phobias, and even other disorders—which then reinforce the fusion in an unhelpful, positive feedback loop. Using the five skills in this book—labeling, letting go, mindfulness, purpose, and acceptance—you'll learn how to finally break free of the struggle, worrying, and avoidance that keep you stuck.

With practice, you'll find that you can counter your anxiety and obsessive thoughts with your own, values-based narrative, and learn how to better accept your thoughts and feelings, so that you can proceed freely and purposefully toward a life that reflects what matters most to you.

We broke our new series on learning Portuguese down into different learning stages. Start with the "Lower Beginner" books followed by the "Beginner" and "Upper Beginner" books. Next, progress to the "Intermediate" series, then test and reinforce your knowledge with the "Conversations" series.
This audiobook is divided into units. While it provides different learning patterns and accommodates various needs, this audiobook focuses on helping you improve your ability to understand, speak, and memorise Portuguese.
In Unit 1 you will hear Portuguese decoded with each syllable spoken very slowly and clearly with repetition. Immediately before each sentence is spoken, you will hear the translation, so you will always understand what is being said.
Unit 2 focuses solely on increasing your listening ability, which will improve your abilities to engage in dialogue with a native Portuguese speaker. This chapter requires you to listen very carefully to nuances in the language.
By Unit 3 you will already notice progress in your abilities to speak and understand Portuguese. The spoken translation is followed by two repetitions in Portuguese at a completely natural speed. While you are learning to process naturally spoken Portuguese, Units 3 and 4 will help you memorise new vocabulary and full sentences.
In Unit 5 you can test yourself on how much you have learned. If you are having difficulties, we suggest you revisit the listening, speaking, or memorisation section of Units 1, 2 3 or 4, according to what you need more help with.
