Summary

The Last Voyage delves into the dramatic ends of famous ships, from warships to luxury liners, exploring maritime disasters and their impact on naval and world history. It reveals how these ship sinkings were not mere accidents but the result of complex interactions between human ambition, technological limitations, and the power of the sea. The book emphasizes the critical insights these tragedies offer into naval strategy, ship design, and our relationship with the ocean. The book examines how each ship's final mission unfolded, starting with its construction and purpose and culminating in the aftermath of its sinking. By analyzing primary source materials, such as survivor accounts and naval logs, the book reconstructs the events leading up to each disaster. It argues that these sinkings represent pivotal moments in maritime history, forcing changes in safety regulations and ship design. Structured to progressively build its argument, The Last Voyage begins by introducing the concept of "the last voyage" and its historical significance. Subsequent sections explore individual case studies chronologically, detailing each ship's history, its final voyage, and the inquiries that followed, ultimately analyzing the lessons learned and their lasting impact on maritime practices.

    China's Foreign Policy...

Throughout the post–Mao reform era, China has championed the principle of sovereign state control, which holds that states should not intervene in the affairs of other states. Yet as Tim Nicholas Rühlig argues in China's Foreign Policy Contradictions, in recent years they have not actually acted this way. Chinese foreign policy actions fail to match up with official rhetoric, and these inconsistencies—in combination with China's growing power—will have dramatic effects on the future shape of international order.

To explain these contradictions, Rühlig draws from in-depth interviews with party-state officials to explain the foreign policy dynamics and processes of the normally opaque Chinese party-state. He demonstrates how different sources of the Chinese Communist Party's domestic legitimacy compete within the complex and highly fragmented Chinese party-state, resulting in contradictory foreign policies. He focuses on three issue areas: international human rights law and "responsibility to protect" (R2P); China's role in World Trade Organization (WTO) policymaking; and China's evolving relationship with Hong Kong.

In this work, Rühlig shows not only why China's foreign policy is so inconsistent, but why it is likely to contribute to a more particularistic, plural, and fragmented international order in the years to come.

When the US president, Harry S Truman, declared the Truman Doctrine in March 1947, he could not have known that the resultant Cold War would persist for over forty years until the dissolution of the Soviet Union in December 1991. In addition to nuclear and conventional military friction between the Eastern and Western blocs, the struggle for dominance involved a remarkable range of activities including the space race, psychological efforts, espionage, even rivalry at sporting functions and technological events. This diversity is reflected in the twenty chapters of Cold War Boys which opens with a vivid description from the author of survival procedures used by English Electric Lightning pilots in the event of nuclear war. From there on, various contributors share their original experiences on a range of fixed-wing aircraft and rotorcraft across the world, including tales from RAF Germany, the Falklands, and the Far East. Each story demonstrates some of the intriguing circumstances faced by aircrew and ground crew whose tenacity and professionalism had to cope with miscellaneous situations of danger, excitement, risk, pathos, and humor. This book serves as a reminder of what air forces faced during the Cold War years as the ever-present threat of nuclear war persisted. A must for all aviation fans.
