Summary

'Persian Empire Growth' offers a compelling exploration of how a modest kingdom transformed into one of history's most remarkable multicultural empires, focusing on the innovative administrative and cultural practices that made this transformation possible.

The book illuminates three key elements of Persian success: their sophisticated satrapal system of provincial governance, groundbreaking diplomatic policies, and their role as a cultural bridge between East and West. Through careful analysis of primary sources, archaeological evidence, and historical accounts, the narrative reveals how the Persians created an empire that valued local customs while maintaining centralized control.

Beginning with Cyrus the Great's conquests in 550 BCE, the book traces the empire's evolution through subsequent Achaemenid rulers, examining their contributions to Persian administrative systems. Particularly fascinating is the empire's development of the Royal Road and imperial postal service, which revolutionized ancient communication and trade.

The Persians' approach to governance was remarkably progressive, allowing conquered territories to maintain their cultural and religious practices while implementing standardized administrative procedures that ensured imperial stability. The work masterfully weaves together archaeological findings, contemporary historical accounts, and administrative documents to present a comprehensive view of Persian innovation in empire management.

By examining the period from 550 BCE to 330 BCE, the book demonstrates how Persian administrative practices influenced subsequent empires and continue to offer relevant insights for modern governance. This multidisciplinary approach, combining archaeology, economics, and political science, provides readers with a deeper understanding of how the Persian Empire's administrative genius shaped both ancient and modern concepts of state management.

During the Battle of the Bulge, the Allies became understandably nervous, and Hitler hoped to capitalize on German momentum with a top-secret special operation that he named Operation Greif. This mission would utilize German soldiers, trained in sabotage techniques and disguised in American and British uniforms, and have them cross Allied lines to hold strategic targets for the German advance while destroying communication lines and ammunition depots. Most importantly, they would cause chaos and confusion by misdirecting the enemy, as Hitler explained in his orders: “I want you to command a group of American and British troops and get them across the Meuse and seize one of the bridges. Not, my dear Skorzeny, real Americans or British. I want you to create special units wearing American and British uniforms. They will travel in captured Allied tanks. Think of the confusion you could cause! I envisage a whole string of false orders which will upset communications and attack morale.”
The Skorzeny he was addressing was none other than Otto Skorzeny, who had become famous by the late stages of the war because of his role in rescuing Benito Mussolini via the Gran Sasso raid. One thing that characterized Skorzeny was a continuing talent for self-aggrandizement and exaggeration of his role in events, which naturally worked on someone like Hitler. In the wake of the Gran Sasso raid, Hitler awarded Skorzeny the Knight’s Cross (one of the highest German awards for valor) and promoted him to Sturmbannführer (Major). Heinrich Himmler, who personally disliked and distrusted Skorzeny, seized the opportunity to raise the profile of the SS and to suggest that the success of the Gran Sasso raid was entirely due to the SS. As a result, it would be Skorzeny who led the Waffen-SS operation that Hitler envisioned for the Battle of the Bulge.

    PRAISE FOR GOING FOR BROKE
"The fullest account yet written of Sunak the rising star." – Andrew Gimson, ConservativeHome
"Clearly written, lively and perceptive, and contains much insight on the complex world of Tory politics." – Vernon Bogdanor, Prospect Magazine
    ***
The speed of Rishi Sunak's advance to 10 Downing Street is without precedent in modern British politics. In mid-2019, he was an unknown junior minister; seven months later, he became Chancellor of the Exchequer; and by October 2022, he had secured the highest office in the land. Aged forty-two, he was Britain's youngest Prime Minister in more than 200 years.
Michael Ashcroft's biography – first published in 2020 and now fully revised and updated – charts Sunak's ascent to the University of Oxford, the City of London, Silicon Valley and Westminster before assuming the most powerful job in the country in chaotic circumstances.
It is the story of a clever and hard-working son of immigrant parents who marries an heiress and makes a fortune of his own; a polished southerner who wins over the voters of North Yorkshire; a fiscal conservative who becomes the biggest-spending Chancellor in history; and a fastidious political operator tasked with reuniting the Conservative Party and repairing an economy in flux.
Casting new light on Sunak's tense working relationship with his predecessor, Boris Johnson, All to Play For shows what makes him tick ahead of a general election whose outcome will have profound consequences for Britain.

Deborah Dundas is a journalist who grew up poor and almost didn’t make it to university. In On Class, she talks to writers, activists, those who work with the poor and those who are poor about what happens when we don’t talk about poverty or class—and what will happen when we do.

Growing up poor, Deborah Dundas knew what it meant to want, to be hungry, and to long for social and economic dignity; she understood the crushing weight of having nothing much expected of you. But even after overcoming many of the usual barriers faced by lower- and working-class people, she still felt anxious about her place, and even in relatively safe spaces reluctant to broach the subject of class. While new social movements have generated open conversation about gender and racism, discussions of class rarely include the voices of those most deeply affected: the working class and poor.
On Class is an exploration of the ways in which we talk about class: of who tells the stories, and who doesn’t, which ones tend to be repeated most often, and why this has to change. It asks the question: What don’t we talk about when we don’t talk about class? And what might happen if, finally, we did?
