Summary

"Marvel of Spoon" presents a fascinating exploration of how this humble utensil has profoundly shaped human civilization and dining customs throughout history. From primitive shells to sophisticated metal implements, the book traces the spoon's remarkable journey across cultures, revealing its crucial role in the evolution of gastronomy and social customs worldwide.

The narrative unfolds through three major themes: the technical evolution of spoon design, its diverse cultural significance, and its influence on modern dining etiquette. Drawing from archaeological evidence, anthropological studies, and culinary archives, the book reveals intriguing insights about how different societies adapted the spoon to their needs. For instance, the development of Chinese porcelain spoons and Ottoman metalwork demonstrates how local materials and cultural preferences influenced design variations.

What sets this book apart is its interdisciplinary approach, weaving together perspectives from metallurgy, cultural anthropology, and economic history to paint a comprehensive picture of the spoon's impact on human society. Through carefully documented examples and case studies, readers discover how this seemingly simple tool became both a practical necessity and a symbol of cultural refinement. The book challenges previously held assumptions about the spoon's development timeline, presenting new evidence that suggests more sophisticated early uses than historically recognized.

Bread is central to God's story, and to your story too.

Our spiritual lives are deeply connected to bread—the bread we break with family and friends and the Bread that is Christ's Body, given and broken for us. It's easy to choose the cheapest, most convenient option, but the life of Jesus and the story of Scripture, as well as the substance of bread itself, shows us that there is more. In By Bread Alone, Kendall Vanderslice, a professional baker and practical theologian who spends her days elbow-deep in dough, reveals that there is no food more spiritually significant than bread—whether eating, baking, sharing, or breaking.

Kendall has struggled with hunger ever since she can remember—hunger for bread, yes, but also for community and for the ability to "taste and see" the goodness of God. She knows the tension of bread as blessing and bread as burden but has learned that bread also offers a unique opportunity to heal our relationship to the body of Christ and to our own bodies. In By Bread Alone, she weaves her own faith-filled journey together with original recipes and stories about the role of bread in church history, revealing a God who draws near to us and creatively provides for our daily needs.

The body is doing what it has...

Recently I experienced a major stroke. I was completely paralyzed on the right side of my body. It was a “Stroke” of good fortune. This is our opportunity as Brahmins, to transform those which others would view as tragedy into an accumulation of power and blessings. My first thought when I was laying in the hospital, on the first day was “where the hell is Baba when you need him?” I had a typical, unknowledgeable, weak, and powerless reaction, which caused sorrow. The second day, an instrument sister brought a murli and read it to me in which Baba answered me saying “Baba only helps those who have courage”. Now my thought was “I have the most courage of anyone I know.” And I decided at that moment to put it into practice. Instead of the old bhakti sanskars playing their endless tune of begging for help etc. I decided to claim my rights as a child of the king. Instantly I found myself in Baba’s lap. Never did he leave me after that, nor did I leave him. Baba has told us that if we take one small step of courage, he will carry us another thousand etc. That was my practical experience.
