Summary

Knowledge Access Changes explores how society has been shaped by the evolution of information access, from ancient manuscripts to the digital age. It examines the educational and technological milestones that propelled this evolution. The book argues that access to knowledge is a driving force behind social, economic, and political change, not merely a byproduct of technological progress.

One intriguing fact is the shift from laborious manual transcriptions to the printing press, drastically increasing information dissemination. Another is the challenge of discerning credible sources from misinformation in today's digital abundance.

The book progresses through three major sections. It begins with oral traditions and written manuscripts, focusing on institutions like monasteries. It then examines the printing press and mass literacy, highlighting societal and cultural reshaping. Finally, it delves into the digital age, analyzing the internet and social media's transformative effects on knowledge access, addressing information inequality and digital literacy.

This interdisciplinary approach, drawing from history, technology, education, and sociology, avoids technological determinism, emphasizing the interplay between technology, society, and culture.

Nearly 500 years after the Spanish conquered their mighty empire, the Aztecs are often remembered today for their major capital, Tenochtitlan, as well as being fierce conquerors of the Valley of Mexico who often engaged in human sacrifice rituals. Unlike the Maya, the Aztecs are not widely viewed or remembered with nuance, in part because their own leader burned extant Aztec writings and rewrote a mythologized history explaining his empire’s dominance less than a century before the Spanish arrived. Naturally, Cortes and other Spaniards depicted the Aztecs as savages greatly in need of conversion to Catholicism. While the Maya are remembered for their astronomy, numeral system, and calendar, the Aztecs have primarily been remembered in a far narrower way, despite continuing to be a source of pride to Mexicans through the centuries.
For the Aztec, astronomy was not a purely scientific pursuit but intimately linked to religious, mythological, and ideological elements that were of the highest importance. The celestial realm held a sacred nature, as did the many gods and goddesses that dwelt there, so for all Mesoamerican cultures, astronomy was a fundamental part of their daily lives. Thus, astronomy was present in their calendars, religion, and even agriculture, and in close relation to astronomy, the concept of time was also an essential part of their worldview. The Aztec recorded many of the astronomical events they observed in codices and hieroglyphic inscriptions, but the main evidence of their deep astronomical knowledge comes from their calendar system. This information was then used to plan the orientation of buildings and ceremonial centers, which were aligned to sunrises or sunsets corresponding to special dates, such as solstices or equinoxes. Observational calendars were also used to schedule agricultural activities, as well as rituals, festivals, and celebrations, on an annual cycle.

The Pasagoula River is the largest unobstructed river in the continuous United States. Because of this lack of restraint, the river has been left to rise and fall naturally with the seasons, overflowing annually into the adjoining bottomland surrounded by some of the most ecologically diverse woodlands, in North America.

Herman Murrah (1935-2022) lived his entire life on the banks and in the swamp surrounding this river in southeast Mississippi. In this book, Herman's eldest son, Davy, details the adventures that continue to inspire young conservationists in the fight to protect our remaining natural ecosystems.

As a young adult, Herman worked as a game warden in the Pascagoula River Swamp. When the Pascagoula Hardwood Company, then owners of the swamp, decided to sell the vast tract of forest for clearcutting, Herman was incensed. Determined to protect this natural wonder, Herman teamed up with other visionaries to persuade the State of Mississippi to purchase the land and preserve it in perpetuity. Herman was appointed area manager for the upper portion of the newly designated Pascagoula River Wildlife Management Area. He dedicated the remainder of his life to preserving, protecting, and improving the swamp for the good of south Mississippi.

Social media has transformed the way people connect, communicate, and share information. What started as simple online forums and chat rooms has evolved into a powerful ecosystem of platforms that shape global conversations, influence public opinion, and drive business strategies. The rise of social media can be traced through key technological advancements and shifting user behaviors that have continuously redefined digital interactions.
In the early days of the internet, online communities were primarily built around forums, message boards, and early blogging platforms. Websites like Usenet and bulletin board systems (BBS) allowed users to engage in discussions based on shared interests, but they lacked the real-time engagement that modern social media provides. As internet speeds improved and web design became more sophisticated, platforms such as Friendster and MySpace emerged in the early 2000s, marking the beginning of social networking as we know it. These sites introduced profile customization, digital friendships, and a sense of online identity that encouraged users to invest more time in their virtual presence.
The launch of Facebook in 2004 marked a major shift in how people engaged with social media. Unlike its predecessors, Facebook prioritized real-world connections and streamlined communication. Instead of anonymous interactions, users connected with friends, family, and colleagues in a structured and highly interactive digital space. This approach quickly gained popularity, and other platforms such as Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram followed, each introducing unique features that catered to different aspects of online interaction. Twitter revolutionized real-time communication with its microblogging format, LinkedIn redefined professional networking, and Instagram capitalized on the growing demand for visual content.
