Summary

"Cultural Archives" explores how civilizations document their existence, profoundly shaping our understanding of past societies. It examines diverse methods of heritage preservation, highlighting elements cultures deemed worthy of recording and the impact of these historical records on modern society. The book argues that a collective analysis of deliberate and inadvertent records provides a more accurate view of a culture's values than any single narrative. For example, ancient Egypt's meticulous record-keeping, from hieroglyphic inscriptions to elaborate burial rituals, offers invaluable insights into their religious beliefs and social hierarchy. The book journeys across continents and millennia, beginning with ancient civilizations and progressing to the digital age. It unfolds in three sections: introducing the concept of cultural archives, examining case studies from various cultures like the Roman Empire and pre-Columbian America, and analyzing how these historical records shape our understanding of those societies today. By drawing on archaeological findings, ancient texts, and ethnographic studies, "Cultural Archives" emphasizes the value of cultural documentation in preserving collective memory and promoting cross-cultural understanding, making it vital for anyone interested in history world.

Do we know what it is?In a world where confusion regarding material reality itself abounds, a true understanding of human nature is needed now more than ever before. TAN Books is pleased to present to those beginning their journey in philosophy a short and succinct primer on this elementary reality: the human soul. Written by the author of the textbook himself, the Philosophy of Man Study Guide was designed as a companion guide for the reader of the text that offers prompts and questions to help hone in on the key takeaways from each chapter and solidify the student’s understanding of the text. Intended to give the basics of the soul—a concept simple to understand generally but difficult  to master—the Philosophy of Man guides the student through the principles needed in clear thinking to encounter and work through difficulties in an increasingly complex world. Knowing the truth of what the soul is and what that means for us will enable us to live as ones truly free. Philosophy of Man is the third of four volumes in the Foundations of Wisdom series by TAN Books; it is designed to provide the student with the foundational principles of rational thinking so as to give him the formation to discover the truth and defend against error.

Thinking of Spain as a modern nation state today distorts the complicated reality that the Iberian Peninsula faced in the past. Spain was a nation in progress, consisting of regions united under the Spanish crown, but with strong regional identities based on different historical and cultural experiences. The largest entities were the kingdoms of León and Castile, but Spain also included the kingdoms of Navarre, Andalusia, Granada, Jaén, Aragon, and Valencia. There were also the principalities of Asturias and Catalonia, the lordship of Vizcaya, and both Guipúzcoa and Alava were “exempted provinces.” Navarre, Aragon, and Catalonia had separate Cortes, which were versions of parliaments (Parker 18-19). This complex system of entities granted privilege to local power structures over the concept of a unified nation and made administration difficult, because there were few standards that applied to all of Spain. Many of the regions had special laws that respected and allowed traditional institutions, administrative patterns, and cultural patterns. These local and regional rights were called fueros and were fiercely defended against centralization.
The Spanish Civil War has exerted a powerful impact on the historical imagination. Without question, the conflict was a key moment in the 20th century, a precursor to World War II, and an encapsulation of the rise of extremist movements in the 1930s, but it was also a complex narrative in and of itself, even as it offered a truly international theatre of war. It marked one of the seminal moments, along with the 1929 Wall Street Crash, between the two apocalyptic wars of the early 20th century, and since it occurred between 1936 and 1939, Spain proved to be a testing ground of tactics, weaponry, and ideology ahead of World War II.

A deeply personal exploration of the generational impact of guns on the Black experience in AmericaA few years ago, Trymaine Lee, though fit and only 38, nearly died of a heart attack. When his then five-year-old daughter, Nola, asked her daddy why, he realized that to answer her honestly, he had to confront what almost killed him—the weight of being a Black man in America; of bearing witness, as a journalist, to relentless Black death; and of a family history scarred by enslavement, lynching, the Great Migration, the also insidious racism of the North, and gun violence that stole the lives of two great-uncles, a grandfather, a stepbrother, and two cousins. In this powerful narrative, Lee weaves together three strands: the long and bloody history of African Americans and guns; his work as a chronicler of gun violence, tallying the costs and riches generated by both the legal and illegal gun industries; and his own life story. With unflinching honesty he takes readers on a journey, from almost being caught up in gun violence as a young man, to tracing the legacy of the Middle Passage in Ghana through his ancestors’ footsteps, to confronting the challenges of representing his people in an overwhelmingly white and often hostile media world, and most importantly, to celebrating the enduring strength of his family and community. In A Thousand Ways to Die, Lee answers Nola and all who seek a more just America. He shares the hard truths and complexities of the Black experience, but he also celebrates the beauty and resilience that is Nola’s legacy.
