Summary

African Independence explores the complex history of decolonization in Africa during the 20th century. It examines how African nations fought to break free from colonial rule and establish their own identities. The book highlights the diverse movements and leaders involved, such as Kwame Nkrumah and Nelson Mandela, while analyzing the challenges of nation-building.

One intriguing fact is how the Scramble for Africa at the Berlin Conference set the stage for many of the struggles these independence movements faced. Another key insight is the role of Pan-Africanism in uniting and inspiring movements across the continent.

The book takes a chronological and thematic approach, starting with the colonial era and the rise of nationalist movements. It then progresses through the different paths to independence taken by various African nations, grouped by colonial power and regional similarities. Subsequent chapters address the hurdles of state-building, economic development, and social divisions.

The book uses primary sources, like speeches, and secondary scholarship to present a balanced view of the triumphs and setbacks during this period. It emphasizes that decolonization was a long process of negotiation, resistance, and transformation, crucial for understanding contemporary African realities.

Modernising Irish Government presents the major historical turning points in the development of Irish public services with a particular focus on the civil service, covering the mid-nineteenth-century reforms, the foundations of the State and the Lemass-Whittaker economic initiative. It introduces the Strategic Management Initiative, its origins and its impact, discussed in terms of efficiency, responsibility and democracy.
Authors Neil Collins, Terry Cradden and Patrick Butler examine the current, key issues within the Civil Service, including the contentious issue of decentralisation. Providing reviews of the institutional framework for regulating monopolies in such sectors as telecommunications, aviation and retail competition, they present a critique of the new kinds of relationships between government and the people by reviewing Social Partnership, the Citizen Charters of government departments and other similar instruments.
This textbook at once examines the scale, scope and structure of the delivery of services to the public and their relationship to the civil service, government departments, commercial semi-state companies and other public bodies, while identifying a number of significant failures in service delivery in detail and offering an analysis for their reasons.

Marx started work on this book in January 1847, as can be judged from Engel's letter to Marx on January 15, 1847. By the beginning of April 1847, Marx's work was completed in the main and had gone to the press. On June 15, 1847, he wrote a short foreword.Published in Paris and Brussels in 1847, the book was not republished in full during Marx's lifetime. Excerpts from section five of Chapter Two appeared in different years, mostly between 1872 - 1875 in papers such as La Emancipacion, Der Volksstaat, Social-Demokrat, and others. In 1880 Marx attempted to publish the Poverty of Philosophy in the French socialist newspaper L'Égalité, the organ of the French Workers' Party, but only the foreword and section one of Chapter One were published. This translation is from the original 1847 French edition. It has been updated to also include the changes/corrections Marx made in the copy of the book he presented to N. Utina in 1876, as well as the corrections made by Frederick Engels in the second French edition and the German editions of 1885 and 1892. The first English edition of this work was published in 1900 by Twentieth Century Press.
