  This is a full recording of Daniel Martin Berkey performing the play Remission, which Backstage magazine called "mind-blowing" and NYTheater called "90 intense and harrowing minutes of spectacular wordplay." Written by playwright Kirk Wood Bromley ("Shakespeare on mushrooms" - LA Weekly), produced by NYC's Inverse Theater (“Best Downtown Theater Company" - NYPress 2001), scored by John Gideon, and originally performed by Berkey himself in the NYC Fringe Festival in 2009 (winning "Outstanding Solo Show"), Remission tells the story of Berkey’s journey into and out of schizophrenia in dramatic verse that one reviewer termed "a terrifying, violent freefall into insanity" (JustShowsToGoYou). 
  With his symptoms beginning at age six, Berkey experienced a spectrum of challenges, including berating voices and haunting visions, paranoia and catatonia, and addiction to sex, heroin, and alcohol. Then, at the age of 51, homeless and deranged, while walking along a freeway on Long Island, he saw a vision – a giant golden cube suspended in the sky from which emanated 3000 winged humanoid figures beckoning him to join them in the World Self. Awaking from the splendor, he walked home, flushed his medications, and has been symptom-free ever since. 
  And while this journey is central to Remission's narrative, the play is more than a retelling. With each line, the play "stretches, exercises, jolts, and exalts the audience" (NYTheater) by immersing it in an experience of actually having schizophrenia, creating a "one-of-a-kind, undiluted and unforgettable trip into the crazy." (JustShowsToGoYou).

  A Clockwork Orange is a 1971 dystopian film directed by Stanley Kubrick, based on Anthony Burgess's novel. Set in a near-future society, it follows Alex DeLarge, a sadistic delinquent who leads a gang of criminals. The film explores themes of violence, free will, and social control, as Alex and his gang engage in brutal acts of "ultraviolence." After being caught, Alex undergoes an experimental treatment to "rehabilitate" him, stripping away his ability to choose between good and evil.   The Tokugawa Shogunate, also known as the Edo period (1603–1868), was a time of unprecedented peace and stability in Japan, following centuries of war and political fragmentation. This era began with the victory of Tokugawa Ieyasu at the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, a decisive conflict that allowed him to consolidate power over the warring daimyo. Three years later, in 1603, he was granted the title of shogun by the emperor, officially marking the beginning of Tokugawa rule. 
  Ieyasu’s triumph at Sekigahara was not merely a military success but also a demonstration of his strategic brilliance and political foresight. By carefully forging alliances and exploiting rivalries among the daimyo, he ensured that his Tokugawa clan would emerge as the dominant force in Japan. Once in power, Ieyasu took immediate steps to secure his family’s hold over the nation. He redistributed land among the daimyo, rewarding loyal vassals and weakening potential threats. This reorganization of landholdings laid the foundation for the centralized feudal system that would define the Tokugawa era. 
  Although Ieyasu formally retired in 1605, passing the title of shogun to his son Tokugawa Hidetada, he continued to wield significant influence from behind the scenes. His retirement was a strategic move designed to solidify the legitimacy of hereditary succession, ensuring that the Tokugawa family would maintain control for generations. This transition of power set a precedent for stability, preventing the kind of succession disputes that had plagued previous shogunates.
