Sinopsis

The Collected Works of Ambrose Bierce: Negligible Tales, On With the Dance, Epigrams showcases the stylistic intricacies and thematic obsessions characteristic of Bierce's oeuvre. This compilation reveals his mastery in blending dark humor with incisive social commentary, offering readers a kaleidoscope of short stories, epigrams, and essays that defy conventional storytelling. Bierce frequently incorporates themes of absurdity, existential ennui, and the vagaries of human nature, while employing a sharp, ironic tone that places him within the American literary canon of the late 19th century, alongside contemporaries such as Mark Twain and Henry James. Ambrose Bierce, a complex figure in American literature, was both a distinguished journalist and a Civil War veteran whose experiences deeply influenced his writing. His sharp observations on life, death, and the human condition resonate throughout his works, stemming from a keen awareness of societal hypocrisy and the fragility of existence. His often skeptical perspective mirrors the disillusionment of his time, offering a poignant critique of both individual and collective human folly. Readers seeking a profound exploration of human truths, delivered with acerbic wit and poignant insight, will find The Collected Works of Ambrose Bierce to be an essential addition to their literary collection. This volume not only serves as an invitation to engage with Bierce's unique worldview but also offers an enduring reflection on themes that remain relevant in contemporary discourse.

George Robert Gissing was born on November 22nd, 1857 in Wakefield, Yorkshire.
He was educated at Back Lane School in Wakefield. Gissing loved school. He was enthusiastic with a thirst for learning and always diligent. By the age of ten he was reading Dickens, a lifelong hero.
In 1872 Gissing won a scholarship to Owens College. Whilst there Gissing worked hard but remained solitary. Unfortunately, he had run short of funds and stole from his fellow students. He was arrested, prosecuted, found guilty, expelled and sentenced to a month's hard labour in 1876.
On release he decided to start over. In September 1876 he travelled to the United States. Here he wrote short stories for the Chicago Tribune and other newspapers. On his return home he was ready for novels.
Gissing self-published his first novel but it failed to sell. His second was acquired but never published. His writing career was static. Something had to change. And it did.
By 1884 The Unclassed was published. Now everything he wrote was published. Both Isabel Clarendon and Demos appeared in 1886. He mined the lives of the working class as diligently as any capitalist.
In 1889 Gissing used the proceeds from the sale of The Nether World to go to Italy. This trip formed the basis for his 1890 work The Emancipated.
Gissing's works began to command higher payments. New Grub Street (1891) brought a fee of £250.
Short stories followed and in 1895, three novellas were published; Eve's Ransom, The Paying Guest and Sleeping Fires. Gissing was careful to keep up with the changing attitudes of his audience.
Unfortunately, he was also diagnosed as suffering from emphysema. The last years of his life were spent as a semi-invalid in France but he continued to write. 1899; The Crown of Life. Our Friend the Charlatan appeared in 1901, followed two years later by The Private Papers of Henry Ryecroft.
George Robert Gissing died aged 46 on December 28th, 1903 after catching a chill on a winter walk.

Pioneering whitewater explorer Wick Walker examines what lured a generation of incredibly daring pioneers into some of Earth's most wondrous yet forbidding river canyons: below Victoria Falls on the Zambezi; the Great Bend of the Tsangpo in Tibet; Tiger Leaping Gorge on the Yangtze; the flanks of Mount Everest; and more.

Loaded with great moments and personal stories, Wick details what these adventurers found there, and within themselves. The extraordinary characters, driven by different motives and visions, but united by their compulsion to seek the unknown and the pulse of free-flowing water, are as remarkable as the daunting geography and conditions they confront.

Whitewater sport today stands side-by-side with mountaineering in participation and public attention, yet it has lagged in generating its own literature. Torrents As Yet Unknown will help fill that gap for listeners interested in human drama played out against great natural challenges.

Mountaineering history is deep and its literature rich, but whitewater adventurers approach and experience the same forbidding terrain from a different vantage, between the walls of their canyons and atop powerful torrents of cascading water.
