Summary

Doctor-in-training Louisa Vaughn has no intention of remaining in Sweetwater Crossing. She's just there for a few days to help a friend. But she can't abandon the injured man she finds at the side of the road. Until his broken leg heals, she'll serve as the town's doctor and midwife. She may not be fully qualified yet, but surely she's better than nothing.

Josh Porter's plans to win his grandfather's challenge and fulfill his father's final wish to gain full control of the family business hit a roadblock when he breaks his leg. But his enforced stay in Sweetwater Crossing gives him new ideas about the expansion of the company into new territory--ideas Louisa could help turn into reality.

If only the town were more accepting of Louisa's talents! Someone is determined to convince her to abandon her dream of healing others. Can Josh help her uncover the person behind the threats before it's too late? And is there any future for them together when neither of them plans to stay?

    New York Times bestselling author Miroslav Volf on why striving for superiority is at odds with the Christian faith

    Christianity Today 2025 Book Award Winner (Popular Theology)

    "[A] smart take on a world obsessed with forward motion."--Publishers Weekly

    Many people believe that ambition--striving to be better than others--improves us and advances society. But what if it actually makes us worse?

    In The Cost of Ambition, world-renowned theologian and award-winning author Miroslav Volf argues that striving for superiority has negative consequences in all domains of life. Instead, we should strive for excellence. Volf explores

    ● what Søren Kierkegaard, John Milton, and the apostle Paul say about the cost of ambition;
    ● how we can achieve excellence rather than strive for superiority;
    ● how to stop being plagued by our own sense of inferiority to others; and
    ● why Christians must retrieve a humbler way of life.

    Volf also examines what the teachings of Jesus and the stories in Genesis say on the matter. Volf explains how striving to be better than others devalues our achievements, surroundings, and relationships by turning them into mere means to an empty goal. This pursuit, though widely accepted in modern life, is at odds with key Christian convictions.

    After exposing the toxicity of ambition, Volf uses contemporary examples to guide us toward striving for excellence.

    God loves kids, and his really good plan is for kids to grow up in loving families with everything they need to be safe, happy, and whole. But the brokenness in the world has caused really big problems in some families. Because God loves these families, he provides people to help them, as well as foster families to welcome the kids who need safe and loving homes. How can we help young kids--kids in foster families, kids in foster care, or kids simply learning--to understand foster care in a gentle and biblical way?

    Beautifully illustrated, God Loves Kids is a trauma-informed, gospel-centered children's picture book designed to help you navigate difficult conversations about foster care with kids. Beginning with God's initial plan for kids and families, the story introduces, with compassion and sensitivity, the challenges that bring about the need for foster care, what it looks like for foster families to show up for kids, and the different feelings everyone involved in foster care may experience. The book ends where it begins, with the promise that God has a good plan for the kids he loves.

    This unique resource helps children understand foster care and how they can trust God and his good plan to redeem every single story.

     “Today is the day I've been eagerly anticipating, and the excitement is electrifying. I'm sitting on a speaker—side stage—looking out on the largest crowd for any event I've ever organized. This moment is hitting me deep. I’m filled with every imaginable emotion. I can't help but marvel at how someone like me, a small-town nobody, managed to bring together something of this magnitude!! The dream I've carried, since I first thought about becoming a concert promoter, is becoming a reality right before my eyes in the form of this massive music festival! The dream, transformed into a vision through an encounter with Jesus, is now real! It’s here! I’m looking out at a sea of nearly 43,000 people, each individual in the crowd passionately singing along with the band.” This is how John Wilson opens Honky Tonk Nights to Christian Lights, the story of his journey from a lonely childhood in his dark and dank basement room in his family’s home in Missouri, through years of longing to belong, through drug, alcohol, and gambling addictions, to marriage and children, to promoting country music in bars and nightclubs, to receiving a vision for his life’s work, to his efforts to “Make Jesus Famous” and take “Church Outside the Walls,” to crowds pouring into festivals and tent revivals drawn in through his work as Founder and CEO of Light the Way Ministry. Since receiving Christ as Savior and acting on the vision John believes was placed in him by his Lord, Light the Way Ministry has been producing events where the Gospel has been presented to 109,575 individuals. From these, more than 3,300 decisions have been made for Christ, and the ministry’s reach for sharing the message of Jesus’ life-changing power has expanded from one tiny town to ever wider fields.
