Summary

'Digital Friends' explores the revolutionary transformation of human relationships in our hyperconnected world, where the average person maintains hundreds of online connections. This comprehensive analysis examines how social media platforms have fundamentally reshaped the landscape of modern friendship, supported by a decade of research spanning multiple continents and diverse demographic groups.

The book presents fascinating insights from a massive study involving 50,000 social media users, revealing how platform algorithms influence friendship formation and maintenance. Through a combination of quantitative data analysis and qualitative assessment, it identifies specific digital behaviors that either strengthen or weaken friendship bonds.

The research particularly highlights Gen Z's unique approach to blending online and offline relationships, demonstrating how different generations navigate the digital friendship landscape. Moving from historical context through contemporary analysis to future implications, the book maintains an evidence-based approach while remaining accessible to general readers.

Each chapter builds upon empirical evidence from social psychology, anthropology, and computer science, offering practical strategies for maintaining authentic connections in virtual environments. The work thoughtfully addresses crucial debates about the validity of purely digital friendships and the impact of social media on empathy development, providing readers with valuable tools to evaluate and enhance their online relationships in an increasingly virtual world.

“Reconstruct[s] Civil War cold cases and crimes through the people who lived to tell about them . . . a unique history.”—MLive   “Crime did not take a holiday during the Civil War, far from it. As Tobin Buhk shows in this fast-paced narrative, the war created new opportunities to gain profits from illegal activities, to settle old scores against personal enemies under the cover of fighting the nation's enemies, to pillage, plunder, and murder amid the carnage and destruction that seemed to offer license to legitimize such crimes. Students of the Civil War will find new information in this readable account.” —James M. McPherson, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Battle Cry of Freedom   This history of the rampant crime that took place in both the North and South amid the chaos of the American Civil War examines cases including currency counterfeiting; the tyrannical actions of Gen. The late Van Slayden trained on the PT-3 kite-like biplane in 1937, but he learned fighter pilot operations flying "by the seat of his pants," walking away from five crashes. Shortly after the invasion of Normandy, he landed on Utah Beach to help establish a US Army Air Forces' (AAF's) presence in Europe. He flew the P-47 Thunderbolt, a fighter-bomber, in combat over Northern France and commanded the 36th Fighter Group-the "Fightin' 36th-at Batogne, St. Vith, the Bridgehead at Remagen, Operations Grenade, Clarion, Varsity and other missions. His 22nd Fighter Squadron was the first in the AAF to land voluntarily on German soil.

He was deep into Germany when the Nazis surrendered on May 8, 1945, which was remarkably anticlimactic. Van Slayden, a country boy from rural Tennessee, like so many of his contemporaries, stepped up to the challenge as part of the Greatest Generation.
