Thales of Miletus, often hailed as the first philosopher in Western history, was born in the ancient Greek city of Miletus, around 624 BCE. As a figure whose contributions have shaped the course of philosophy, science, and mathematics, Thales stands as a foundational figure in intellectual history. Although much of his life remains shrouded in mystery due to the passage of time, the few details that have survived reveal a thinker whose ideas and insights went beyond the conventional beliefs of his era.
Thales is traditionally considered the first to break away from mythological explanations of the world. Prior to Thales, the Greek understanding of nature was largely dominated by myth and religious explanations, where gods and divine forces were invoked to explain the natural phenomena. Thales, however, proposed a radical shift by seeking rational, natural explanations. He is best known for his theory that water is the fundamental substance from which everything originates. This insight marks a profound moment in intellectual history because it moved away from mythological thinking and introduced the idea of a unifying principle underlying all things.
In addition to his contributions to philosophy, Thales was also a mathematician and astronomer, and his influence in these fields is considerable. He is credited with being the first to predict a solar eclipse, using his understanding of the stars and celestial movements. His work in geometry is equally important—he is famously known for Thales’ Theorem, which laid the groundwork for the development of geometry. This theorem states that if two points are on a circle, and a line is drawn through them, then the center of that line will always lie on a straight line through the center of the circle. This geometric insight shows his ability to understand and systematize mathematical concepts that were previously unexamined.

Don't Count Me Out chronicles the life of Bruce White from the beginning of his drug use in elementary school through criminal acts fueled by his need for drugs, to his miraculous recovery three decades later and involvement in the treatment of addicts, where he is now a leader in the rehabilitation field.

Rafael Alvarez's recounting of White's journey should inspire those dealing with the fallout of addiction. Alvarez, a journalist and screenwriter, allows the listener to get inside the head of an addict who was stealing alcohol from his parents at the age of nine, selling drugs and tripping on LSD and PCP by the time he hit seventh grade, and hooked on morphine before he turned fifteen. "Bruce White? I thought he was dead?" is a response encountered in many of the interviews Alvarez conducted.

Don't Count Me Out shines a spotlight on an improbable and stunning miracle. Though this is just one person's story, the contributing factors of early sexual assault, the role of permissive preoccupied parents, and the need for peer approval, among others, will resonate with many as the opioid crisis continues to haunt us.

An investigation into the failings of Australia’s mental healthcare system, grounded in a personal story of a mother–daughter relationship

Journalist Elfy Scott grew up in a household where her mother’s schizophrenia was rarely, if ever, spoken about. They navigated this silence outside the family home too; for many years, this complex mental health condition was treated as an open secret.

Over the past two decades, we have started talking more about common mental health conditions like depression and anxiety. But complex conditions like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and psychosis have been left behind, as have many of the people who live with these conditions or who care for them.

Part memoir, part deep-dive investigation, The One Thing We’ve Never Spoken About is filled with rage at how our nation’s public discourse, emergency services and healthcare systems continue to fail so many people. It is also a work of care, telling the little-heard stories of people who live with these conditions and work at the front lines of mental health. Above all, this timely, compelling book is informed by hope and courage, breaking down taboos and asking big questions about vulnerability, justice and duty of care.

‘Expansive and generous … brimming with kindness, revelatory accounts and wit. The book itself is a thing of grace.’ Rick Morton

‘Elfy brings empathy, reason and generosity to a book Australia so desperately needs.’ Zara McDonald

‘Absorbing and mind-opening, this is panoramic in scope, while offering a deeply intimate portrait of fierce familial love and care.’ Benjamin Law
