Summary

In "Curious Punishments of Bygone Days," Alice Morse Earle masterfully navigates the intricate tapestry of historical penal practices, illuminating the bizarre and often harsh methods employed in various cultures. Earle's literary style is characterized by careful research intertwined with a vivid narrative that brings the past to life, making her work both engaging and educational. Rooted in the early 20th-century fascination with social history, this book explores the moral dimensions of punishment, revealing societal attitudes towards crime and justice in bygone eras and underscoring the transformation of legal systems over time. Earle, an esteemed American historian and author, was deeply influenced by her extensive knowledge of colonial history and social customs. Her passion for infusing historical accuracy with relatable anecdotes likely stems from her upbringing in a heritage-rich environment, along with her commitment to documenting the nuances of daily life. This synthesis of history and narrative draws readers into the uncomfortable realities of past punitive measures, setting the stage for reflective discourse on modern legal practices. This book is indispensable for historians, sociologists, and general readers alike, offering an eye-opening examination of punitive measures through a humane lens. Earle's eloquence invites readers to consider the implications of justice and morality, making "Curious Punishments of Bygone Days" a thought-provoking addition to any bookshelf.

Wandering the Wards provides a detailed and unflinching ethnographic examination of life within the contemporary hospital. It reveals the institutional and ward cultures that inform the organization and delivery of everyday care for one of the largest populations within them: people living with dementia who require urgent unscheduled hospital care.

Drawing on five years of research embedded in acute wards in the UK, the authors follow people living with dementia through their admission, shadowing hospital staff as they interact with them during and across shifts. In a major contribution to the tradition of hospital ethnography, this book provides a valuable analysis of the organization and delivery of routine care and everyday interactions at the bedside, which reveal the powerful continuities and durability of ward cultures of care and their impacts on people living with dementia.

As Hispanic citizens rally to the political right, they will provide the economic, cultural, and political renaissance to save the American republic.

Hispanics have moved materially to the political right in recent years—but why? What explains this marked and sustained shift? Bad Hombres details the radicalism of the modern Democratic Party, which has turned so many outcasts into political orphans. Steve Cortes provides evidence of the massive benefits of this Hispanic surge to the right. Cortes himself has been a key driver of this mass political movement, first as the lead Hispanic face of the 2016 and 2020 Trump campaigns, and presently as the primary Latino advocate for the New Right—patriotic populism. Given this vantage point, Cortes makes a powerful case that reveals how the teetering American nation will find a national rescue by entrepreneurial, tradition-minded Hispanic citizens.

    Adventurers - Courageous...

This book consists of three titles:
1 - Christopher Columbus was an Italian navigator and explorer who made 4 explorations across the Atlantic Ocean, paving the course for European discovery and settlement of the Americas. His journeys were the first European contacts with the Caribbean, Central America, and South America, and were financed by the Catholic Monarchs of Spain.
Christopher Columbus is an Anglicization of “Christophorus Columbus,” a Latin name. Columbus was born in the Republic of Genoa and spoke a Ligurian dialect as his mother tongue, according to most intellectuals. He went to sea at an early age and traveled all over the world, as far north as the British Islands and as far south as Ghana.
2 - Galileo engaged in useful science and innovation, clarifying the characteristics of pendulums and "hydrostatic balances," and also studying speed and speed, gravity and free fall, the concept of relativity, inertia, and projectile movement. He created the thermoscope and some army compasses, and he used the telescope to observe celestial things clinically. Telescopic verification of Venus' stages, observation of Jupiter's 4 biggest satellites, research study of Saturn's rings, and analysis of sunspots are amongst his contributions to observational astronomy.
3 - Captain James Cook FRS was a British explorer, navigator, cartographer, and captain in the Royal Navy who is most well-known for his 3 explorations to the Pacific Ocean, especially to Australia, between 1768 and 1779. Prior to finishing 3 trips to the Pacific, he drew precise maps of Newfoundland and made the first documented European encounter with the eastern coast of Australia and the Hawaiian Islands, and the first noted circumnavigation of New Zealand.
