Summary

In "Democracy in America: Volumes 1 & 2," Alexis de Tocqueville delves into the sociopolitical landscape of early 19th-century America, offering a profound analysis of democracy's effects on society, culture, and individual behavior. The text navigates through the complexities of American political institutions, civil society, and the evolving relationship between liberty and equality, all articulated in Tocqueville's insightful and often poetic prose. Structured around his travels and observations, the work is contextualized within the broader discourse on political philosophy during a period marked by revolutionary ideas about governance and human rights. Alexis de Tocqueville, a French aristocrat and political thinker, was profoundly influenced by the ideals of the French Revolution and the emerging democratic movements of his time. His visit to the United States in the 1830s was pivotal, as he sought to understand the success of its democratic institutions and their implications for Europe. Tocqueville's background in law, coupled with his insights into the social fabric of American life, shaped his analytical approach, allowing him to weave together observations on democracy's strengths and vulnerabilities. This foundational text is essential for readers interested in political theory, history, or sociology. Tocqueville's nuanced perspectives remain remarkably relevant today, illuminating the ongoing challenges and triumphs faced by modern democracies. Engaging with this seminal work will enrich your understanding of democratic principles and their critical role in shaping contemporary society.

In the 1982 State of the Union address on January 26, 1982, Reagan invokes his self-deprecating humor and calls for “a new spirit of partnership between this Congress and this administration”. Reagan cites the “stagflation” of the 1970s: double digit inflation, interest rates over 21%, and over 8 million unemployed.
Reagan notes economic improvement and calls for reduced federal spending, further tax reductions, and fewer regulations, saying our economic problems “are the inheritance of decades of tax and tax and spend and spend.”
Reagan calls for dismantling the Departments of Energy and Education but keeping a reliable safety net for those in need by rooting out waste and fraud in the food stamp, Medicare, and Medicaid programs. Reagan decries the growth in federal grant programs to state and local governments and calls for major reforms.
A short paragraph was lost at 23:15 of the Ronald Reagan presidential library recording. The missing words can be seen in the text version.
In meetings with foreign leaders, Reagan “spoke of the strength of the free marketplace system and how that system could help them realize their aspirations for economic development and political freedom.” Reagan endorses sanctions against the Soviet Union for its actions in Poland and Afghanistan, and urges “that we rebuild our defenses.”
Reagan concludes with a call to work together to preserve “the sacred flame of liberty -- this last, best hope of man on Earth.” This address followed the assassination attempt and the applause at the start and end was extensive.

Why did Putin launch Operation Z in Ukraine? Are Ukrainian forces using neo-Nazi volunteers? What are the forces involved and the reality of the military conflict for the past six months? What do we know about war crimes like Butcha? Have Western economic sanctions worked? Has the massive shipment of arms by the West had an effect on the conflict? After the best-seller Putin: Master of the Game, whose analysis has been praised worldwide, Jacques Baud returns in this book to the root causes of the war in Ukraine and the reasons that pushed Vladimir Putin to intervene on February 24, 2022. Using information from intelligence services and official reports, he analyzes the course of the military actions and the way they were interpreted in the West. He explains the political and economic upheaval of the world order, as well as the long-term consequences of Western sanctions on our daily lives. It reveals how the conflict could have been avoided and what avenues were deliberately left open by the United States and Europe. Colonel Jacques Baud is a former member of the Swiss Strategic Intelligence, a specialist in Eastern Europe and former head of Doctrine of the United Nations Peace Operations. Within NATO, he was involved in programs in Ukraine, including after the Maidan Revolution of 2014 and 2017.
