Summary

A collection of short stories by one of the preeminent voices of nineteenth-century Norwegian literature. Alexander L. Kielland ranks alongside Henrik Ibsen and Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson as one of Norway’s great literary masters. First published in 1896, this volume of Kielland’s short fiction introduced English-speaking audiences to his incisive realism and his satirical yet humane vision of Norse society. The ten stories included here offer a fascinating depiction of nineteenth-century Norwegian provincial life, as well as a vivid portrait of Kielland’s native town, Stavanger.

The veteran autoworker and author of the pro-labor newsletter Live Bait & Ammo offers a blow-by-blow analysis of workers’ rights under attack.   Greg Shotwell was a machine operator at General Motor’s Delphi division during its tragic spinoff from GM and eventual bankruptcy. He watched from a front-row seat as the United Auto Workers Union collaborated with antilabor policies that led to plant closings and cuts to wages and benefits. A dissident member of the UAW, Shotwell made a name for himself chronicling the outrages and absurdities of corporate managers and corrupt union leaders in his popular shop-floor newsletter, Live Bait & Ammo.  Autoworkers Under the Gun collects Shotwell’s essential writings during that fateful period. These LB&A fliers quickly grew legs of their own, distributed by rank-and-file workers in auto plants across the United States and cited by industry analysts. Spanning a decade of autoworker resistance, this body of work stands as a call to action for a new generation of workers coming of age in recession-wracked America.

Twelfth Night is regarded as one of Shakespeare’s best loved plays and features heavily the themes of cross dressing and mistaken identity to great comic effect. Set in Illyria on the Adriatic sea it involves Lady Olivia who due to the bereavement of her father and brother will not entertain any suitors, not even Duke Orsino. The Duke sends an intermediary to try and woo her and chooses the boy Cesario who is actually Viola searching for her twin brother Sebastian. Much confusion and much romance ensue in this accessible and entertaining tale. This narrative version was written by Mary & Charles Lamb.

A dose of sense from the voice of parliamentary reason.Throughout the expenses scandal and the lobbying scandal and all the other storms which have buffeted Parliament, Dr Tony Wright is the one MP who has consistently provided a measured, sane and sensible reaction to events. As Chair of the influential Public Administration Committee he has risen above party and partisan politics to offer a sometimes lone voice of reason. His new book considers the wider implications of the various political ructions and the public reaction to them, and argues that if we want to defend politics, then we also have to defend politicians: the class of people is intrinsic to the activity. Somebody has to do the messy business of accommodating conflicting demands and interests, choosing between competing options, negotiating unwelcome trade-offs, and taking responsibility for decisions that often represent the least worst course of action. That somebody is politicians. They give voice to our hopes, but they also, inevitably, feed our disappointments, even if their name is Obama. From one of our most erudite, intellectually rigorous yet sensible politicians, Doing Politics is just the book the nation needs.

    Foucault - A Very Short...

Born in 1926 in France, Foucault is one of those rare philosophers who has become a cult figure. Over the course of his life he dabbled in drugs, politics, and the Paris SM scene, all whilst striving to understand the deep concepts of identity, knowledge, and power. From aesthetics to the penal system; from madness and civilization to avant-garde literature, Foucault was happy to reject old models of thinking and replace them with versions that are still widely debated today. A major influence on Queer Theory and gender studies (he was openly gay and died of an AIDS-related illness in 1984), he also wrote on architecture, history, law, medicine, literature, politics, and of course philosophy. In this Very Short Introduction Gary Gutting presents a wide-ranging but non-systematic exploration of some highlights of Foucault's life and thought. Beginning with a brief biography to set the social and political stage, he then tackles Foucault's thoughts on literature, in particular the avant-garde scene; his philosophical and historical work; his treatment of knowledge and power in modern society; and his thoughts on sexuality. This new edition includes feminist criticisms of Foucault's apparently sexist treatment of the Jouy case, as well as a new chapter offering a unified overview of the College de France lectures, now a major focus of interest in Foucault.
