  Anaximander’s legacy is vast and multifaceted, cementing his place as one of the pioneering figures in the history of philosophy and science. As a pre-Socratic philosopher from Miletus, Anaximander made significant contributions that laid the groundwork for future scientific and philosophical inquiry. 
  Anaximander is best known for his revolutionary ideas about the cosmos. He proposed that the universe originated from the apeiron, an indefinite or boundless substance, which he believed was the source of all things. This concept marked a significant departure from the mythological explanations of the cosmos prevalent in his time, suggesting instead a naturalistic origin of the universe. His cosmological model, which included the idea of a cylindrical Earth suspended in space, demonstrated a sophisticated understanding of celestial mechanics for his era. 
  Often regarded as the first true scientist, Anaximander applied rational and empirical approaches to understand natural phenomena. He was one of the first to propose that natural laws govern the world, an idea that forms the cornerstone of scientific inquiry. His work in biology suggested that life originated in water and that humans evolved from fish-like ancestors, anticipating evolutionary theory millennia before Darwin.

  Rodney grew up during the crack epidemic, with guns, drugs, and the threat of incarceration an accepted part of daily life for nearly everyone he knew. To rent his own apartment, he needed a paycheck—something the money from dealing drugs didn't provide. For that, he took a position in 1992 with a new nonprofit, the Earth Conservation Corps. Gradually, Rodney fell in love with the work to restore and conserve the polluted Anacostia River that flows through DC. As conditions along the river improved, he helped to reintroduce bald eagles to the region and befriended an injured Eurasian Eagle Owl named Mr. Hoots, the first of many birds whose respect he would work hard to earn. 
   
   
   
  Bird Brother is a story about pursuing dreams against all odds, and the importance of second chances. Rodney's life was nearly upended when he was arrested on drug charges in 2002. The jail sentence sharpened his resolve to get out of the hustling life. With the fierceness of the raptors he had admired for so long, he began to train to become a master falconer and to develop his own raptor education program and sanctuary. Rodney's son Mike, a DC firefighter, has also begun his journey to being a master falconer, with his own kids cheering him along the way.

In essence, naturalism posits that the natural world, as observed through science, is all there is. This perspective has deep roots in both philosophy and science, offering a framework for understanding reality that relies heavily on empirical evidence and reasoned inquiry. 
  At its core, naturalism rejects supernatural forces, divine beings, or metaphysical entities as explanations for natural phenomena. Instead, it emphasizes that everything in the universe, from the smallest particles to the vastness of the cosmos, can be understood in terms of physical, biological, and chemical laws. Naturalism also suggests that humans, as part of the natural world, are subject to the same laws governing the rest of the universe. This view aligns closely with the scientific method, which is built upon observation, experimentation, and the continual refinement of theories based on evidence. 
  In defining naturalism, it is essential to recognize its distinction from other philosophical frameworks. Unlike idealism, which asserts that reality is primarily mental or spiritual, naturalism asserts the primacy of the material world. Similarly, it differs from supernaturalism, which attributes the workings of the universe to forces beyond natural laws, such as gods or spirits. Naturalism’s embrace of the empirical allows it to form the foundation for scientific inquiry, fostering advancements in fields ranging from physics and biology to psychology and medicine.
