Summary

Remarkably Bright Creatures - A Comprehensive SummaryShelby Van Pelt created the character Tova in Remarkably Bright Creatures, based on her Swedish grandmother who coped with grief by constantly keeping busy. The story revolves around various characters who feel trapped and swim in circles, trying to break free from their constraints.Despite the story's human themes, the inspiration for the book came from Van Pelt's writing exercise on an octopus narrator. She was inspired by a viral video of an octopus attempting to escape from a tank and delved deeper into exploring these creatures and their capabilities. Through the character of Marcellus, Van Pelt gained a new perspective on human strengths and weaknesses.Listening to her internal Marcellus allowed her to examine her own behavior and observe the human tendency to justify damaging actions. Van Pelt discovered that viewing things from an external, anthropomorphic perspective can help people see their habits in a new light. The novel opens with Marcellus's perspective, but the central theme is how he encourages people to examine their behavior in a different way. Here is a Preview of What You Will Get:⁃ A Detailed Introduction⁃ A Comprehensive Chapter by Chapter Summary⁃ EtcGet a copy of this summary and learn about the book.

Franz Kafka meets Yorgos Lanthimos in this provocative new novel from one of America's most brilliant and distinctive writers

In a speculative future, Abel, a menial worker, is called to serve in a secretive and fabled jury system. At the heart of this system is the repeat room, where a single juror, selected from hundreds of candidates, is able to inhabit the defendant's lived experience, to see as if through their eyes.

The case to which Abel is assigned is revealed in the novel's shocking second act. We receive a record of a boy's broken and constrained life, a tale that reveals an illicit and passionate psycho-sexual relationship, its end as tragic as the circumstances of its conception.

Artful in its suspense, and sharp in its evocation of a byzantine and cruel bureaucracy, The Repeat Room is an exciting and pointed critique of the nature of knowledge and judgment, and a vivid framing of Ball's absurd and nihilistic philosophy of love.

Herschel Caine is a soon-to-be master of the universe. His hedge fund, built on the miracle of machine learning, is inches away from systematically extracting obscene profits from the market. His SoHo offices (shoes optional, therapy required) have been fine-tuned to reel in curious investors.

But on the night of May 12, at his elegant Cobble Hill townhouse, he has something else on his mind—the dinner party he and his wife have devised to woo their new A-list neighbors. When the evening fizzles, Herschel indulges in a devilish prank that goes horrifically awry, plunging him into a tailspin of guilt and regret. As Herschel's tightly constructed world starts to unravel, he clings to the moral clarity he finds in the last place he'd expect: a sudden connection with a neighborhood dog.

A wildly inventive, reality-bending trip, The Vegan holds a mirror up to its listener and poses a question only a hedge fund manager could ask: Is purity a convertible asset? The more Herschel disavows his original sin, and the more it threatens to be revealed, the more it becomes something else entirely—a way into a forgotten world of animals, nature, and life beyond words.

Suddenly talking and walking upright, a stray tomcat in ancient Egypt becomes the young Pharaoh’s intimate and, when accused of his murder, time travels to New York City and learns how to raise him from the dead.
The cat is quick-witted, wisecracking narrator as well as free-spirited, ever-curious protagonist, and the story he tells is an exotic, imaginative, spell-binding tragicomedy. The novel interweaves feline and human, past and present, natural and supernatural. It contains numerous surprises, twists and turns, intriguing characters, both human and animal, fascinating revelations about ancient Egyptian history and culture.
While exploring a looted tomb in ancient Egypt, the cat is kicked in the ass by the Vizier, the Pharaoh’s uncle and the second in power only to him. Able to speak as a result, the cat immediately gives voice to his intelligence and sense of humor and captivates the young Pharaoh, making him laugh for the first time since his parents’ death. The cat becomes the Pharaoh’s constant companion and, at the royal palace and on a tour of Egypt, participates in the festivities, developing an insatiable appetite for good food, wine, and gossip. Gradually, he renews the Pharaoh’s ability to enjoy life and inspires him to become a stronger leader. The bond of selfless love they share will change Egypt’s destiny.
The cat has a good friend in the High Priest of the god Amun-Ra and seeks his help in solving the mystery of his human powers and the supernatural manifestations that plague him. He has a mortal enemy in the cat-kicking Vizier, who hates him for his close relationship with the Pharaoh. The Vizier eventually murders the Pharaoh and accuses the cat, who flees by time-traveling with the High Priest to New York City, where they find an ally in an Egyptologist’s daughter.
In New York, they go to an ancient Egyptian exhibit, end up in Central Park, then at a cathedral, and later retrieve a lost spell to revive the dead.
