The Trail of Tears was a harrowing series of forced relocations that took place between 1830 and 1850, impacting approximately 60,000 American Indians from the so-called "Five Civilized Tribes." These tribes, which included the Cherokee, Muscogee (Creek), Seminole, Chickasaw, and Choctaw nations, were driven from their ancestral lands in the Southeastern United States to designated areas west of the Mississippi River, an event orchestrated by the United States government. The forced removal was the culmination of a decades-long process of ethnic cleansing that occurred gradually, as tribes were stripped of their homelands, cultural identities, and livelihoods. Alongside them, thousands of African American slaves owned by these tribes were also relocated, compounding the tragedy.
The Indian Removal Act, passed in 1830, paved the way for the systematic relocation of these tribes. It was during this period that the Cherokee removal in 1838—often considered the most infamous and final forced relocation east of the Mississippi—occurred. This event was largely triggered by the discovery of gold in Dahlonega, Georgia, in 1828, which sparked the Georgia Gold Rush. The prospect of wealth led state officials and settlers to covet Cherokee land, ultimately resulting in the forced march to the newly designated "Indian Territory" in what is now Oklahoma.

This book contains these philosophical topics:
    - Feminist Philosophy: Feminist philosophy has emerged as a critical lens for understanding and deconstructing gender roles, power structures, and the ways in which societal norms shape individual identities. At its core, feminist philosophy challenges traditional, patriarchal systems that often position women and marginalized genders as secondary to men. It is not merely a critique of these systems but an exploration of alternative ways of thinking about power, justice, and equality. Feminist philosophers have sought to unravel the deep-rooted assumptions about gender, questioning how these assumptions limit the full potential of individuals and societies.
    - Political Philosophy: Political philosophy plays a central role in the development of societies, offering profound insights into the principles and ideas that shape governance and human relations. At its core, political philosophy seeks to understand the fundamental questions of power, authority, justice, and the rights of individuals within a collective. By examining these issues, political philosophy provides a framework for interpreting and evaluating the structures that govern our lives, from the most intimate social arrangements to the global political order. It is through political philosophy that we come to grips with the nature of justice, equality, freedom, and the role of the state in promoting the common good.

    ‘Enlightening, moving’ SIR IAN MCKELLEN
From the acclaimed and bestselling biographer Jonathan Bate, a luminous new exploration of Shakespeare and how his themes can untangle comedy and tragedy, learning and loving in our modern lives.
‘The web of our life is of a mingled yarn, good and ill together.’
How does one survive the death of a loved one, the mess of war, the experience of being schooled, of falling in love, of growing old, of losing your mind?
Shakespeare’s world is never too far different from our own ‘permeated with the same tragedies, the same existential questions and domestic worries. In this extraordinary book, Jonathan Bate brings then and now together. He investigates moments of his own life – losses and challenges – and asks whether, if you persevere with Shakespeare, he can offer a word of wisdom or a human insight for any time or any crisis. Along the way we meet actors such as Judi Dench and Simon Callow, and writers such as Dr Johnson, John Keats, Virginia Woolf and Sylvia Plath, who turned to Shakespeare in their own dark times.
This is a personal story about loss, the black dog of depression, unexpected journeys and the very human things that echo through time, resonating with us all at one point or another.
Bate's autobiography is not just a collection of his experiences, but a study of how Shakespeare's themes have permeated through history and continue to resonate in our lives. His criticism of the tragedies and existential questions we face, and his teaching of how to navigate through them, is a top literary work that transcends the English language.
For fans of Stephen Greenblatt (Will In The World), and Ben Crystal (Shakespeare on Toast).

Empress Wu Zetian (624-705 AD) was the only woman to be the sovereign ruler of imperial China. A teenage concubine of the Tang Emperor Taizong, she seduced his son while the emperor lay dying. Recalled from a nunnery as part of an intricate court power-game, she caused the deaths of two lady rivals, before securing her enthronement as the Emperor Gaozong's consort. She ruled in the name of her husband and two eldest sons, presiding over the pinnacle of the Silk Road, before proclaiming herself the founder of a new dynasty. Worshipped as the Sage Mother of Mankind and reviled as the Treacherous Fox, she was deposed aged 79, after angry courtiers murdered her two young lovers. The subject of countless books, plays, and films, Empress Wu remains a feminist icon and a bugbear of Chinese conservatism. Jonathan Clements weighs the evidence of her life and legacy: so charismatic that she could rise from nothing to the height of medieval power, so hated that her own children left her tombstone blank.
