Don’t tell me you weren’t. I know it. And so do you. Working in that dead-end job, stuck in a body that only made you more bitter by the day. You deserved better than that.” He shrugged. “I could do it for you. So I did. “If you don’t like it, I can change you back,” he added hurriedly. “Or even, you know. Give you something different. Within certain parameters.” He grimaced. “I can’t do much with height. Once your skeleton reaches adulthood, it doesn’t like to be changed. The bones get brittle if you try. But if you want to be blond, or have smaller boobs, or a J-Lo butt, well, I can cook you up a batch of nano that will do the job in a couple of days.” Addison spoke softly, but there was an element of anger that even he was able to catch. “So you chose me as your guinea pig, Carl?” His head rocked back. “Of course not! I would never do that. I knew it was safe!” “How?” “I tested it on myself, first.” “What?” Carl gestured at his body with a wave of his hand. “Do you really think I went through a growth spurt at the U of I, Addy? Or that I got shredded from lifting weights at the rec center? I looked into my future and I saw a skinny, scrawny, pencil-necked geek who would never, ever get laid. And I said hell no to that. “It took a while. Almost too long. Nanotech isn’t a joke. It’s damn tricky work, especially when you’re working on a genetic level. One wrong move and the nanobots could turn you into a puddle of gray goo. The testing took time I couldn’t really afford. Another six months and I wouldn’t have been able to do anything with my height.” He stared at his legs contemplatively. “As it is, I think I might have some arthritis issues down the road. But it worked,” he said fiercely, vindication ringing in his voice. “I changed my life.” He put his hand on her hip. “Just like I changed yours. I hope. “Beauty,” he said quietly, running a finger up her side. Her skin broke into gooseflesh at his caress. “Desire. I was always horny, Addison. Ever since I hit puberty and started getting boners. But you…” “So you decided to play God?” “No. Of course not.” He grinned down at his sister, used to the aggravated growl. “I decided to play Darwin. And improve on natural selection.”
