He couldn’t just park his car in her driveway. And his mother and sister would never buy the notion that Joe had decided to go for a three-hour walk in December. So he drove around the neighborhood and parked six blocks away, behind a dumpster at the grade school both he and Hailey had attended when they were younger. No one would ever look for his car there. Then he approached Carol’s house from the opposite direction. Still, he felt horribly exposed as he got close, as if everyone in the neighborhood was looking out their windows with disapproving stares. Excitement gripped his belly as he strode up the front walk. This was either going to be the stupidest thing he ever did, or one of the best afternoons of his life. But whatever it was, it was going to be interesting. His finger hesitated over the doorbell. Then remembering Carol’s instructions, he turned the doorknob and simply let himself in. She was waiting for him. He took her in for one shattered second, then whipped his head around, staring at the windows. Luckily, the shades were drawn, so no one could see what he did. Which was good. Because Joe didn’t want to share this sight with anyone. Her lingerie was the same color her dress had been the night before – a deep, deep crimson. But there the similarities ended. The dress last night had been sexy, but not actually indecent. Carol’s lingerie skipped past indecent, giggling naughtily, and entered the unexplored frontier of depraved. It was, Joe thought numbly, technically a bra and garter set. But he thought garters were supposed to actually attach to something – perhaps stockings or panties, rather than dangling down along a woman’s thighs, drawing the eye to her pale skin and the secret place between her exquisitely carved thighs. And the bra…Joe was not an expert. But Mom would have asked why I was wearing nice clothes when I told her I was going to the movies.” “You look fine.” She took his jacket and draped it over the arm of a couch. “Now,” she said, swaying back on high heels. “Let me tell you the rules.”
